I stopped into a card shop that i never been to thats about 1.5 hours away from my house. found they had 3 boxes of cards I wanted at $140, $140, and $115. I decided to buy 1 and head on my way, over night i decided heck with it i will go buy the other for $140, and when i get their i decided to just get both. when he got back to the counter for me to pay he turns around and hops on ebay and decided the $115 box sells for $140 online also and rips the price tag off and tells me its $140 not $115 cause thats the market price. I get frustrated and think for a second and decide to tell him i would do $125 since it was priced $115. he looks at me and says "ok you don't want it and heads to put it back on shelf with the new price" so then I get really mad and tell him to take the other box cause i no longer want his stuff with him doing what he did about the price.r an i walk outta the store and he rambled on about how long it would take him to keep up on current prices of eveything, so just before i was out the door I said if your gonna change the prices due to ebay don't bother put price tickets on every item and closed he door. Just curious what anyone else would have done. let me hear it plz.
 
You made the right choice by not giving him a dime.
If I went to my LCS and they pulled a crap move like that...the relationship would end immediately.

Thankfully you can apply your hard-earned dough somewhere else.
 
I think walking away is reasonable. LCS has never done anything like that, but a guy at a show had a huge box of like 4/10$ and when I picked my cards he's like "oh I haven't really gone through all of these some may be more" ...ok.... Not likely to do business with you again.
 
Wow, first off something like that would never happen to the LCS that I frequent b/c they actually know how to run a hobby store. Ebay prices change on a daily basis and you should have asked to look at the listing and I am sure you could have seen the same box for a cheaper price. Wax prices are usually set in stone and if there is an increase or decrease in prices, it is across the board and not limited to just one store.
 
you did the right thing. i hear store owners on here and other boards talking about trying to establish a relationship with their customers by treating them right and fair in order to insure repeat business, that is the only way some of the smaller stores can keep thier business afloat. this guy obviously doesn't know how to treat his customers or run a business, and deserves to go under. you should wait till he has his going out of business sell and see what you can get the box for.

20 years ago, I'd go back and bust one of his damn windows. I'm older now and supposedly don't condone those kind of actions. Now? Now I'd go up and down his *** verbally and then come on here and anywhere else I could to make sure people don't shop there and hope the sack of crap closes down.

I'd also send him a rude Christmas card for giggles.
 
You did the right thing, if someone pulled that on me id laugh in their face, I woulda told him to shove those boxes where the sun don't shine, what a tool
 
you can't decide to change the price in the middle of a transaction. Imagine going to a book store, bringing your purchase to the clerk and then they say, hey I have decided to charge five bucks more right now.

The seller is entitled to ask for whatever they feel warranted, but not in the middle of someone paying for the goods. Just ridiculous.

You did the right thing. He figured he had you since you went to the effort of coming back. His price was probably based on what he paid wholesale, however long ago, so he had nothing to lose by selling it at the sticker price.

And some card shop owners wonder why they don't see repeat business.

I wouldve cursed him and look at other wax he has way over priced and see if he would match the ebay price on it. Im sure if he had a 150 box that sells on ebay for 75, i bet ya he wouldnt do the market price on it.
Give out this tools shop name and give him a bad rep, Chances are hes scewed probably some other members on here.

In response to this quote - that is correct. There is such a thing as retail sales laws (in all jurisdictions) that are put in place to protect buyers and sellers. You can not change the price of an item mid-stream. If the tag says $115 - the price is $115. The only exception to the rule is if the store can establish that the price was put on in error or someone has changed price tags - which I think is pretty self explanatory. In this case, the price was $115.

To the original OP - you did the right thing. Your $$$ walking out of the door versus making it's way into his cash register speaks louder than any words you can convey.

The proprietor needs your $$$ to pay the bills and make a living. The bank accepts cash - not excuses.
 
I'd make it a point to never go back, slam his name at every opportunity, and post things about him on Facebook that may or may not be true.

I had a similar situation with a single card on the weekend. I walked away too, good for you, its the best thing to do. Don't support these types of guys. No honor at all.
 
If it had been the other way around, he has $140 on it and you said eBay had it for $115, he would have cursed you up one side and down the other. Amazing that he would go as far as to quote eBay for market prices when so many shop owners are suffering because of it.

I will leave it at this - I hope that guy you met at the shop wasn't the store owner. If it were, then PLEASE NEVER SHOP THERE AGAIN and TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS. Similar goes for good card shops - shop there lots and tell all your friends.
