Thought this might be a fun discussion. Some of us have seen quite a few "innovations" and "fads" come and go, some stayed, some never got off the ground. So what's next? What's the next big craze or attempt to innovate?

I think goalie masks have been mentioned before, but that seems to be unlikely given most use their mask at least a full season and I'd assume some guys hang onto them after retiring them. I think the attention those cards would get on the secondary market would be INSANE!

What's the next big thing?

I can remember a time before glossy cards, foil, autos, game used, video cards, printing plates, etc!

I'd like to see cards that have pieces of mem that were used in the same game as the picture on the card. Photo-match sort of thing. Heck even call the set "Photo-Matched".

If the player would also add an inscription related to something significant that happened in that game, that would be pretty cool. Call it "Photo Matched Inscriptions". Like "First NHL goal" or "First Hat Trick" or "First NHL Game" or even "Game Winning Goal" or "25th Career shutout"...whatever, could be a million different things.

I like it! "Authentic Moments Materials". There you go Upper Deck. You're welcome!

Instant cards...

Topps Now and Panini Instant is really cool. Topps Now is hugely popular.

I would have loved to see an Auston Matthews card after he scored 4 goals his first game.

Also Panini Instant does the inscription auto thing after a huge event like Nowitzki inscribed 30k plus his auto after he scored 30,000 points on his Panini instant card. Collectors love those!

UD is missing the boat on easy money...

I like Jeremy's photo matched idea, great way to get a bit more mileage out of stick or jersey pieces if the card pictures something relevant and significant.

One thing I know Panini did that I'm surprised didn't come back were the game used decals off of player helmets, Panini Prime did it:

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/12-13-Panini-Prime-Erik-Karlsson-5-Collision-Course-All-Star-Game-2012-/401150845496?hash=item5d66742238:g:cycAAOSwbYZXgEyX

I thought of this recently as the Sens added a Canadian flag decal to their helmets, as the Canadian team left in the playoffs. I for one would love to have cards featuring those stickers. I'm sure there's other elements of the helmet they could use to extend the value of it beyond a few stickers.

Had never seen those stickers before. Neat cards.

What about arena ice? Water from when the arenas thaw sealed in a card? Thinking Rinkside Signings, but the auto being over the sealed water?

I think that's definitely possible for UD. Maybe not for some older Memorabilia, which I understand, but gathering a bunch of somewhat recent or unique pieces that they for sure know when it was worn. Then making a set with a bunch of unique game-dated jerseys (& other Memorabilia) would be great to see. The way that memorabilia is tracked now, even with things like goal pucks, etc, I think this is definitely possible.

Even with this years Supreme Patches, the All-Star jerseys used in that set would make for a great "Photo-Matched" themed set.

I'd love to see a signed ticket stub insert, including (possibly) inscriptions.

And yes, definitely some kind of specificity in memorabilia - down to the game. A Topps Now/Panini Instant type experience including something - jersey, puck, net, stick, etc., - from that game would be huge.

Goalie stuff would have collectors going bonkers for it. Would love an added version of Supreme's in SPGU or put it in Premier as "Mega-Masks" and have just monster chunks from masks put into those card, I bet those would turn out sick.

I've wanted to see Upper Deck do this for a while now. It's such a good idea!

Plus it gives a larger "checklist" range because any player can have a huge night & deserve a Topps Now or Panini Instant card.

You just never know who's going to come up big for your team. This reminds me about that time Bartolo Colon hit his awesome home run with the Mets and got a Topps Now card. Collectors love that stuff.

If I had to pick one idea I've had, it would be remnants from the arenas, especially the ones we no longer have around.
I've mentioned it in the past, the idea of having a piece of places like Maple Leaf Gardens, War Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo aka "The AUD", or now Joe Louis Arena aka "The JOE" would be incredible. Easily you could use things from all the current arenas, and this would also fit in with Upper Deck's obsession with the outdoor games, using pieces like seats or signs from the different ballparks.

This would be like bringing UD Black Game Night Ticket autos to life! I like it.

Maybe on the back there would be a short summary of the game that was featured on the ticket, and maybe even a game stat snapshot of what said player did that night. Although, I can imagine that their stats might not be all that pretty every night, so maybe only feature their stats if they had a really good night.

UD did a redemption program in 2002 Authentics football, in which collectors could actually pull redemption cards for signed UD memorabilia. I was "lucky" enough back then when I collected football to pull a redemption for a Ron Dayne Wilson NFL football. I would LOVE for UD to revisit that concept in hockey. Most of us are not able to afford a Gretzky UDA Oilers jersey, or a dual 16X20 of McDavid/WG. UD could possibly even cross-promote sports (since you can pull Tribute cards in CUP of athletes not related to hockey.) Even have GAME-USED signed memorabilia that can be redeemed. Tiger Woods, LeBron James, Michael Jordan...etc

I'm well aware that something like this was inserted in Upper Deck's Master Collection / All-Time Greats (or whatever it's called) in which you could redeem a card for a full game used item(s)...as I saw one lucky collector pull a redemption card for Scott Niedermayer's full equipment.

Something else I think would be cool, if the players were generous enough to get on board is to have a "Golden Ticket" (a la Willy Wonka) in which 5 lucky collectors could do something related to hockey & Upper Deck, completely comped by UD. Just spitballing some ideas, but they could be:

1.) You & a guest get to go to NHL Rookie Shoot

2.) You & a guest get to go to NHL Winter Classic / All-Star Game / SC Final

3.) You & a guest can "Spend a day with a player" & take in a game (probably limited to UD Exclusive athletes)

Just things like that. If UD wants to bring us closer to the game...there's some ideas.

They should take a puck that has meaning (I don't know, player scored a goal with it lets say), slice it in half (and thin it out) and put it in a 2/2 card.

Have the player sign the puck in a sharp and maybe inscribe the date.

11/15/17

Kind of thing.

Maybe on the other half put:

GWG vs OTT

I love a lot of these ideas and are very cool for the autograph/memorabilia collectors but I would love to see something as simple as more meaningful insert sets. Go back to the Pacific Premiere Date idea but have the numbering more meaningful to each player in the set.

Just the use of the newest technology combined with some thinking around the numbering would be a lot of fun and likely affordable too.

Pinnacle did this back in the '90s but with no indications of the actual game!
I have a few supposedly GU'ed ones.

A real-time, Topps NOW style set would be very interesting. As milestones and other significant events happen throughout the season UD could print limited edition insert cards that collectors could order from the website and get them after they've been made. Game-worn and autographed versions could be done also.

Speaking of Topps, the designs they have used in their Skate digital app have been quite good all season long. I think Topps with a license could make some serious waves in the hobby.
