When do you stop collecting a player?

I've followed one of my players to a new team, Halischuk. First time I've ever done that. I did move out the multiple copies I had of his stuff. No need to hoard that anymore. I'm still at 100% (I don't include plates and 1/1's, I include /10 and greater)

I've also shifted over to a building a set. Which is proving to be very fun and difficult at the same time. I'm building my own version of a panini certified master set.

I will be adding a new player PC this year, it's Adam Henrique, it's a Devils rc that has played on a Team Canada WJC team. I just really love that tournament.

I focus on my primary PC players I have been collecting for years, and pick up some of the new future PC team players with cards I think are unique.
To keep things interesting, I like adding to my multi-team Cup collection for unique patches of players I have respect for.

Only way I will stop doing that is if I expire, and I have no plans on doing that any time soon ;)

I was going to stop collecting Gaborik when he left Minnesota........but I like him too much....and it's still fun. And that's why it's called a HOBBY...you do it for fun!

I do like to have a few side collections also ... North Stars game-used players, old-timer game-used (pre-1960), a few ITG Ultimate subsets, etc...it isn't strictly Gaborik, although that is what I'm most known for.

I stopped collecting Franzen cards because I couldn't justify spending the money on a player who had no connections to the Oilers/Blue Jackets. The funny part is, I've started a Markstrom collection and I'm spending more money on his cards and he has no connections to the Oilers/Jackets. I will not stop collecting his cards though.

I bounce my focus around om my various PC collections whenever I hit a rut.I collect Sakic and Paul Stastny as my main PC focus, but last summer for instance I decided to hit 1000 cards for my Forsberg PC.In this offseason I have moved my focus to the hometown Blues PCs,for instance I decided to collect one of every Shanahan issue in a Blues jersey. And I always go on missions to add to my Joe Mullen,LaFontaine,Peter Stastny, and Liut PCs whenever the mood strikes.

for me it was when they decided we needed 1000 different Yzerrman cards each year, that made it no fun for me anyways

since I collect Gretzky I know how it feels to have 1000 Gretzky cards a year after he retired 10 years ago.
I still haven't given up yet but I just collect what I can afford. Once it start to cost too much or if it's no fun anymore I'll stop.

For Miller, it will never stop, I knew if I focused on a player based on the Sabres I would end up dissapointed. I mean ill pick up current sabres if I like them, such as Myers, Vanek and Roy, but Miller is the only guy I can say ill always collect, he's my idol, and a big role model to me

right now....lol. just decided that i'm giving up some of my Callahans, mainly parallels that i don't have too much interest in. well, i guess im still collecting him, i'm just done with trying to go after everything since he's starting to appear in more products, just not possible with my budget.

My observation.. it should be fun when it doesnt bring you joy to see bubble mailers with your name on it or ripping packs searching for those big hits, then what are you spending the money for... i love datsyuk but i dont have to much money to spend on cards so i pick up what i can when i can, theres not a real reason to hoard for me. and it keeps that moment when i get a datsyuk card much more sentimental.

For me, it's when it stops being fun.

I've slimmed back on the Roy PC because there are certain cards where it's just aggitating to have to grab one (I'm looking at you, Champps mini's), so I grab what I want. This holds especially true with my Forsberg PC considering how much more expensive his stuff is.

But when I just don't care to grab anything more for those PC's, I won't. By then, the shinies will have consumed me.

I'll have to echo the fun meter. Card collecting is a hobby. I realize that trading cards is a business as well for many people, but I seriously doubt many people player collect in this regard. People may prospect by picking up the more popular cards such as Young Guns, SPA autos, Cup ARP's, etc., but I can't see anyone looking for the Victory base cards and obscure inserts from a business perspective.

If you player collect and it stops being fun looking for and acquiring cards then that is a great time to stop. If the termination of fun is due to a trade of teams, the lack of cards, the cost of cards or whatever the reason may be, if a hobby does not bring enjoyment then it's not worth doing.

I gave the checklist a full year after Sakic retired. That's my official chase list. Everything after that is governed solely by "Do I like that? Ok, I'll get one. Or six."

That's just me. I asked myself "Am I really gonna keep dumping money into this forever?" It's not as though that's an issue in itself, but it's a question I had to ask. The answer was quite satisfying: "Collect what you like, don't worry about the rest."

When low print runs started. I'm an OCD kind of guy, and if I can't get it all, I won't go for it. When there are 4364 cards of a player a year #'d to 3 or less, I got fed up. Now, I just collect anything that I like randomly.
Also: when the Flyers traded Renberg.

As others have said, when it stops being fun. I don't care what team he play for ... I am lucky in that Hamill just happens to play for my favorite team, but even if he gets traded, I'll still go after him (unless he goes to Montreal). I personally enjoy the chase of the parallels and putting together "rainbows." So for me, yeah, when it's not fun any more ...

for me its when its not fun anymore.

I took a long break out of the hobby a year ago, and when I came back, it was fun again. sometimes that's exactly what you need, a break. As for my main PC of Martin brodeur..... well the costs of a lot of his cards are way out of my reach at times, the number of cards itself are too many, so i just collect as much as I can base/parallel/insert wise when I can, and get a high end piece when my budget alows me too.

i'm a super collector by no means, but i'm ok with that. I like the mini milestones along the way. for example im about 10-15 cards away from hitting the 100 card mark for my Brodeur PC, and that will be one awesome day :D

I used to be into Patrick Roy ...then I thought one day how many red pieces of jersey do I need????? And thats when I stopped ...ill still pickup the odd piece or auto here and there but other than that
