Who do you have for the 2017-18 Hart Trophy?

I'm coming back to this one.

The award goes to the player "most valuable to his team" - so for me, I would always have a hard time seeing a player on a non-playoff team win.

McDavid is the best player in the league. He's now opened up a 6 point lead in the scoring race, he's broken 100 points, will (likely) be over 40 goals before the end of the year. I think he's going to get serious consideration for it - the shear numbers he's put up (despite playing in a giant suck hole for hockey) will get him that.

It comes down to this through for me: Where would the Oilers be without McDavid? The answer - "Basically, the same spot".

The closer we get to the end of the year, the more I think this is MacKinnon's trophy - *IF* the Avs make the playoffs. He's got a big numbers lead on Hall (both Goals & Points) who would be my second pick.

McDavid has scored or assisted on 46.4 % of his teams goals this season. That is 16% higher than the next nearest player. He is averaging almost 2pts/game since the All Star Break.

Without McDavid, Oilers would be DEAD LAST and likely competing for the record of worst team of all time.

Worst team of all time? It's possible, but I don't think it would really mean all that much.

I think if you finish last by 2 points, 12 points, or some history mark - you had a terrible year, and you know it.

I realize the pace he's scoring at, and the tear he's been on since the AS break.

I guess I was looking more as the West standings, rather than the whole league, but this is sort of my point:

Edmonton is (today) ahead of CHI, VAN, ARI. Without McDavid they would certainly be behind CHI (only up by 2 points) and possibly slip behind one (or both) of ARI or VAN (up by 9).

At the end of the season... if they finish in 15th, 13th, or 12th - Does it really matter? For as good as McDavid has been this year, is the difference between Vancouver's season and Edmonton's really that big of a deal?

My answer is no - it doesn't matter.

..... so back to the Hart trophy: The fact that McDavid has single-handidly dragged the Oilers from dead last into 12th place in the West, it doesn't do anything to add to the idea that he deserves the award, at least for me.

So your award has changed from "most valuable to his team" to "most valuable to his team if they make the playoffs". Fair enough. I still think he is by far the most valuable to his team, especially if he leads the league by alot!!!

Decided my Top 4 (in no particular order) for this would be:

Mackinnon
Hall
Giroux
Kopitar

No way any of their teams make the playoffs if it isn't for those 4 guys. Kopitar will almost certainly not get the attention he deserves, but 92 points, led Forwards in ATOI, plays in all situations, etc.

All 4 of the guys had monster seasons to propel their teams into the playoffs.

My top 4 as well, Kopitar definitely had the most "under the radar" great season.

My best,

TSN had a segment on this a couple weeks back they basically said it was between McDavid and MacKinnon. I agree these two are on the ballot for sure. With the season over now, I'd put Hall in there as a third player, but I'd bet either McDavid or MacKinnon win. If I had to choose though, I'd say MacKinnon wins - given the dramatic fashion that the Avs took to get into the playoffs on the final game of the season, along with the obviously amazing season MacKinnon's had.

I'm not a flyers fan by any means but I think Giroux should win, he's my choice. With out Giroux the Flyers wouldn't have made it to the playoffs and at many times in the season it looked like the flyers wouldn't make it. Looking forward to the Pens - Flyer's series, looks like it could be fun to watch.

I would give it to McDavid, he's the best player in the league, and without him the Oilers would've had fewer points than Colorado last season.

You may be right. The Oilers are way to far out of the playoffs for him to win. Mcdavid got good players justbunderachievers. Hall advMackinnon has worst players and carried their team to the playoffs, they deserves it and both were not that far behind in points.

I hope you are right but something tells me that McDavid will win it (hope it's wrong).

I think it will go to McDavid as he was the points leader and is becoming the face of the league. I think it should go to MacKinnon given the turn around the Avs had this year and the phenomenal season he had given who he was playing with.

Its interesting to read thru this entire topic again lots of interesting opinions.

I really feel that Malkin has been an outstanding complement to his team.
Taylor Hall personally lead the charge of the Devils to relevance in a year I figured they would do squat.
and Nathan MacKinnon , well I just cant say enough about the job he has done in what i thought was going to be a tank year for the Avs after they scuttled Duchesne.

That being said Id vote for MacKinnon

A little late to the party but my vote goes to Giroux. It was between him, Hall, and Mackinnon but I went with Giroux because he broke 100pts. Mackinnon was real close though for getting the Avs in the playoffs after putting up sub 50 points last season.

As much as I want to say MacKinnon I have to give it to Hall. Mack had more help than Hall did (Rantanen quietly racked up 84 pts and Barrie's chemistry with the two goes largely unnoticed) meanwhile Hall has a ridiculous lead over the next highest scoring Devil who is a rookie center in Hischier. He generated offense no matter who he was on the ice with and put up some clutch multipoint games down the stretch to help them seal it.

Kopitar, MacKinnon and Hall. Yep!

It’ll be Kopitar in a shocker, LA PR department pulled the same move with Doughty and his Norris win.

I'll go with Taylor Hall for the win. All are deserving. But I can't believe Matthew Tkachuk couldn't snag a nominee slot.

It’ll definitely be MacKinnon or Kopitar, we can bet on that. MacKinnon probably got some help from his homie Sid with the voters so it wouldn’t surprise me if he wins. But I still think Kopitar will get the upset and Hall is obviously very worthy.

Taylor Hall hits the snooze button on Edmonton, good for him, great story.
