Why do people do this...

Personally, I never really liked the stickers that sealed the toploaders - most of the time, the toploaders "sleeves" would be warped inwards, and it just didn't look appealing to me . . .

One solution would be to spend a bit more money and put each card in a one touch with a special sticker sealing it (just like the ETopps cards from 2002) - for the amount of money you are spending on a pack, I think it would be a good idea, AND, it would look better.

While I realize that one touches would be more expensive than top loaders, I'm sure ITG would be able to work out a good deal with Ultra Pro (or whatever company makes one touches) to buy them, since they would be purchasing close to 50,000 of them (I could be wrong on the number)

Just FYI: Sakic sold for $800 and the Brett Hull at auction recently for just over $500. Given that Gabby has a dedicated core of very jealous and competitive collectors, $1K isn't an outlandish sum of money for this card.

IF they want it.

Steve, spoken like a true dealer ....you're using past tense terminology here. There WAS a dedicated core of Gaborik collectors....we were competitive....but we were never jealous. We even helped each other out to get cards into collections. But now, there IS NOT a dedicated core of Gaborik collectors anymore........just me! Everyone else has either stopped completely (Slovakia diehards included); stopped and started selling off their collections; pick up a few cards they like of Gaborik, or (in Murray's case) start a new collection of different cards (Made To Orders) and just go after the big Gaborik cool cards he likes the look of...like a Stick Rack. He just picked up an UM9 Gaborik Glove 1/1 he liked. Good for him! I'm not jealous at all...happy for him to get it in his collection. :)

Because there isn't that core of Gaborik collectors to compete with, and due to the fact he was injured for a complete year (you know what that does to a player's hobby value), his card values and card prices have drastically dropped.......so $1K for that Gaborik is an outlandish price in this day and age!!!!!!!! Murray is right...the card is a $200 card...not in a Sakic or Hull league (Hall of Famer locks). But comparing his card to those other players is a good sell tactic.

If there is a person willing to pay $1k for that card, well congratulations to the SELLER!!!!! You just made out. But knowing the Gaborik market right now, I'll bet it doesn't sell for that price.

But that's only my opinion.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

And to give my 2 cents to the top loader debate, I keep mine in their top loader with seal because I think it is how the card was in its original state. That's just me. Sort of like the big debate on the old Topps Finest and Select Certified cards with the peel film. The film even had writing stating it was a protective coating and to peel off. But some collectors wanted it to stay in its original state and left the film on. Personally, I left the film on the cards of players I collected...original card state was how I liked it. But for the lesser players, I peeled the film and boy did the cards ever look prettier without film!! :D

Yes, I have gotten some Superlative cards where the seal has broken when I opened the box. I still keep them in the top loaders.

To each his own....do what you like, it's your card. But if you do ever sell it, you will encounter buyers who do want it in its original case and will not buy it if it isn't. But there will also be buyers who don't care.

I'd still like the Gaborik Stick Rack card....in or out of the top loader.

I see it is back on eBay......but now in a top loader with ITG seal. Hmmmmmmmmmm

That's a great description - "uncirculated".

As for Arthur's comments... the sealed toploaders add class to the product, especially when you open it. They also add an extra level of protection for shipping the boxes. If I'm dropping $400-$450 on a book of Superlative, I want to see that ITG has spent time securing and protecting the cards.

B.

Very understandable Bruce...

I honestly dont mind taking out the PC cards from the loaders. But recently, i purchased 3 high end Superlative traders from everyones favorite ITG seller on ebay ... all 3 showed up with broken seals...

Now im either gna have a tough time trading those awesome pieces, just because of the broken seals (which was not mentioned in the auctions)
Or, would have to spend $15 to send them back registered mail, when ive already paid $17 to get them registered mail :(

You'll have to explain the difference, because only with a whole lotta spite do I see you guys ensuring that no Gabby card went below the threshold set by whatever you guys made each other pay. :) It remained a fact of life for some time - Gabby cards with shorter print runs were money in the bank, as it appeared that you guys were unwilling to let any sell more cheaply than the ones you'd bought. That may not be the actual motive - but it's certainly what it looked like from the sidelines.

The point when Gaborik cards were hot $$ commodities was when a Slovakian (eBay ID: kodes32) started buying everything Gaborik with no care of $$ value. When the sellers saw him going nuts, they jacked up their BIN prices, or started with high prices with a Best Offer, and this guy would pay stratosphere prices. We tried to compete, but he kept raising the bar and sellers knew they could get high $$ for Gaboriks. Me and Murray were his only high $$ card competitors and we had to go high to get any high-end cards from his grasp. But when he offers $1250 for a Cup Gaborik/Havlat Dual auto NHL Shields redemption and the same for the Gaborik/Kalus one, you just go "You win...that is crazy!" That is why the Stick Rack guy is asking $1999 for the card...thinks kodes32 is out there with a $1200 offer.

Well, I think he blew his bank up because after a year of crazy buying, he just disappeared from the Gaborik scene. Now Gaborik cards are at what they are supposed to be at....not at Gretzky card levels. :D

I'll also add that we never bid against each other and always tried e-mailing each other to see who was going for or wanted what. I now I also never bid on a card I didn't want. If we were jealous of each other. Then why did Curt sell me the property of.. and later I traded it back. We both loved that card and shared it like the :stanley: If he ever moves it you know where it will end up..

Ridiculous... just like asking $1999 for this gabby card. $200 maybe. MAYBE.

$200? You gotta be kidding.

As far as the debate here goes, im with most and as soon as i know one of these cards is PC, its busted out and into a one touch, but it is nice that the cards come sealed like this because it adds some authenticity to the cards (mainly the patches).

As far as those Topps uncirculated holders that you posted at the start of the thread, i cant stand them. The cards move around way to much in those and the corners/edges get all dinged.

I also wanted to chime in about this, ever since Gaborik went to the Rangers alot of Wild fans pretty much quit collecting him. I find alot of New Yorkers that are starting up new collections of him want him in Ranger uni's.

I still collect him but not as heavily as I once did. I was only a autograph collector of him. If I get some time someday I will scan all of them so you can what I have :D

Curt is right about prices, they are not worth like Gretzky anymore. I used to cringe when I saw prices like the Great one. Makes me want to collect Just Gretzky for that fact.

Without reading everything, I would prefer that the card comes in the sealed top loader when I receive it. If it is a PC card, I will break the seal and put it in a one touch. In a few instances I have received them with the seal broken, I am a bit put off, but not horribly. Many times I don't know the seal has been broken when I get it, and if they are chances are I didn't pay BIG money on it anyways.

I always broke all my PC Superlative cards out. http://s147.photobucket.com/albums/r291/iidaemmi/Gilmour Superlative/
Why?, because it's not really sealed. Sometimes when I received some superlative card, that tape is already partially open. Second, How can you put it in your binder?
I think ITG made an mistake with these Superlative cards. It must be sealed good, or no sealed at all.

I never broke ITG Ultimate cards.

Harri

For a card like that I wouldn't care if it was sealed or not. I mean it's a 1/1 right? It's not like a patch was potentially tampered with and would make you wonder if it's real.

Ridiculous... just like asking $1999 for this gabby card. $200 maybe. MAYBE.

$200 for a Gaborik 1/1 game used stick piece of his name plate?

Do you by chance have any cards for sale?

The card sold for $260.55 ........ $215 if I wouldn't have bid. A bit lower than the original $1999 price. :giggity:

I rest my case...I guess I know the Gaborik pricing a little better than most.

Rraincock was close, too! :D

Just hope the person who won it doesn't go ... "Hey, Curt...I have this nice Gaborik card for you. Only $1000.........." :foottap:

:D

Are you kidding? I love when that happens.

You love it when someone comes to you and says "Hey, Steve...I have this nice Sakic card for you. Only $1000.........." :D

Or you love it when you say "Hey, buddy...I have this nice (insert name the player of the card you just bought for $260) card for you. Only $1000.........."

:giggity: :)
