Will the NHL ever introduce the Bobby Orr Trophy?

If you only want to talk stats, here's a few for you...

Norris Trophies: Orr 8, Coffey 3
Hart Trophies: Orr 3, Coffey 0
Art Ross Trophies: Orr 2, Coffey 0
Points per game average, career: Orr 1.3927, Coffey 1.0866
Goals per game average, career: Orr .411, Coffey .2811
Assists per game average, career: Orr .9817, Coffey .8055
Points per game average, career, playoffs: Orr 1.2432, Coffey 1.0103

I think the picture is becoming fairly clear by now...



Number of games Wayne Gretzky played with or against Bobby Orr in order to make this statement: Zero (ya, I didn't play any games against either one, but am old enough to have watched both of them and understood what was going on in a game.)

Hey Matt, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if you want to bring up stats, the ones above should be the proof positive. Don't get me wrong, Coffey was a great offensive defenceman, I loved watching him, and would rank him in a three-way tie with Potvin and Bourque. But, this bunch is so far behind Orr it should not even be debatable.

The number of Norris, Hart, or Ross trophies show an amazing player, not necessarily the best offensive defenceman.

All your average points per game, assists per game etc...prove my point. It's couldshouldawoulda extrapolation. We can only guess wether or not Orr could have maintained that pace his whole career. Coffey's numbers reflect over 1400 games as opposed to Orr's 657.

Lastly, you are right, Gretzky never played with Orr, but he nor anyone else had to in order to form the opinon as to who is the best offensive defenceman. Besides, when it comes to offence, Gretzky wields a pretty powerful opinon.

You then made the point yourself. If you don't want to extrapolate then the by the numbers Ray Bourque is the best offensive d-man of all time, because he has the most points period.

It seems that the Norris usually goes to an offensive D man. Yeah I know there have been 5-6 defensive D Men picked but not often. Maybe what is needed is an award for best Stay at Home D Man. It could be named after Allan Stanley or Bob Baun or Scott Stevens.

I think you misread what he was trying to say. I don't think he implied Coffey's stats were inflated because he played with Wayne. He was merely pointing out that his opinion is biased because he played with Coffey and not with Orr.

And yeah, the Bruins were good, but Orr lead them. Conversely, the Oilers were good, but Coffey did not lead them.

Go back up and re-read the the post. It has nothing to do with Coffey's point total because he played with Gretzky...

It had to do with Gretzky saying Coffey was the greatest defenseman ever, yet he had never played with Orr so how could he make that assumption?

Just because Gretzky says it doesn't make it gold. I love Gretzky as a player, but this is the same guy who said he would pick Fuhr over any other goalie ever to play in net for his team. Again, I'm an Oilers fan and Fuhr is one of my favorites ever, but sorry Wayne, he wasn't the best ever, and I don't think its really accurate to say that Coffey is the best offensive d-man ever.

Orr racked up those numbers without anywhere NEAR the depth of talent Coffey could call "his team". QED.

If Orr hasn't revolutionized the position, a player like Coffey may have been made into a forward. Just food for thought...
