I will chime in and say it is definitely a real patch. While I have not been keeping scans of every other player in the debut patch set since release, I have been keeping scans of all the Ovechkin's since then. If it was faked it was done immediately upon being pulled. As others have posted, there are several other similar patches.

And it did not come from a black home jersey, it came from the shoulder of a white road one...
