Your Hobby Related Goals/Resolutions For 2021

2021 Goals:

1. Keep knocking out the few sets/cards I'm after. I finally came across an Iginla to complete the jersey set from 2002-03 Private Stock Reserve. Not a costly card, but the base version is heavily short printed (only /125 when most are /1000+). I've missed a few opportunities over the years but finally caught one for cheap recently.

Now my main focus will be finding the last two cards for the 2002-03 ITG-Used Vintage Memorabilia set. Still need two of the big hitters - Beliveau and Plante - and missed out on sales of both earlier this year while I was preoccupied with finishing grad school. They will turn up again eventually!

I will also be on the lookout for a few of my white whales - Legendary Signatures or Legends Classics Gilbert Perreault XSP autos or the UD Century Legends Epic Signatures Gretzky.

2. Cut back on E-Pack, if not outright stop using it. I love the idea of it and that it allows me to bust packs easily, since I don't have an LCS that sells hockey. However, I just want to restrain my spending habits a bit and genuinely enjoy the physical act of opening boxes more. The instant gratification of E-Pack can be addictive. Major cards missing from my last physical delivery order has also dissuaded me from E-Pack for the time being.

3. Finally add a Sidney Crosby autograph to my collection. I have somehow never pulled a Sidney Crosby autograph, despite consistently opening cards for twenty years now. I've pulled Young Guns, Ice and Trilogy RCs, plenty of mem cards, etc. Every now and then an affordable option surfaces on auction, but I really want to try to luck into pulling one before I go that route. I finally pulled my very first McDavid auto out of Chronology Vol. II and it was indescribably satisfying. Matthews and Toews are the two other primo players have eluded me as well and are on my list.

4. Continue to cleanup my storage and displays. This is ongoing. I've made great strides with sorting what cards and sets I want easy access to, which cards I want to be able to display, and which ones need to be in safe storage. Most of this is complete but I have one more big storage shipment to make.

One thing I accomplished just this month with this is a collection of cards that I rotate on display. I wanted a way to safely keep the cards when they are not out for viewing. Very pleased with the results and the project was a fun way to feel like a museum curator.

5. Find a way to add at least two HHOF autos to the collection. Certified (preferably pack-issued) HOF autos are the crux of my collection focus: players, builders, Foster Hewitt and Red Fisher Award recipients, etc.. At this point, the only players I don't have autos of either never signed or only have expensive cut signatures (or is the Ken Dryden Future Trends fingerprint auto - someday I'll make myself pull the trigger on one!). I already had autos of everyone in the 2020 class and with the announcement that there will not be a 2021 class, I'll have to be diligent to add some affordable cut signatures if I am to increase the collection.
 
I didn't set any goals for 2020, per se. At the start of the year, I was trying to focus on picking up graded rookie cards of HOF players across all 4 sports. That quickly came to a halt when COVID hit.
After picking up a nice Roy collection in April, I purged me entire non-hockey collection and focused exclusively on the Roy PC. To say 2020 was a fruitful year for the Roy PC would be a gross understatement.

I'd say my 2021 goals are to continue adding any and all pre-lockout Roy cards I can get my hands on, while slowly expanding my focus on HOF/future HOF graded rookies. If I can add 15-20 of those, I'll consider it a success.
 
I sold two very large PC cards to a fellow HI member a couple years ago and have been trying to get at least one back since. This has been an ongoing goal of mine and I hope to be successful sometime in the next one to 30 years.
 
I've got a lot of goals for both my cards and my museum. Let's get at 'em!

For the museum, this is what I want to accomplish in 2021:

1) Add at least another 20 goalies into the collection (with at least one superstar)
2) Have a public exhibition since I could not in 2020 (COVID permitting)
3) Set up a game worn only expo (COVID permitting)
4) Increase revenue, awareness, and frequency of commissions for my relevant services (ie: photomatching) by at least 50%
5) Wrangle in at least one new goalie every 3-4 weeks for my "Interview With An NHL Hero" YouTube series.

For my cards:
1) Finally start group breaks and razz raffles (already have my first razz planned for January) on my site to increase my company's revenue by up to 40%.
2) Increase the scale of my card sales online by at least 50%
3) Buy up more collections purely to resell.
4) Develop self control and open less boxes for myself, and instead focus more on my group breaks (this is the toughest one lol).
5) Grow my YouTube channel and try to get it to 1000 subscribers by the end of 2021. 6) Then, tying in with #5, go for monetization so my business can have extra revenue. Extra revenue means more cards and more museum additions. Win-win!
 
My goal is simple - get rid of everything that was associated with doing shows or was collecting dust in my basement. I'm likely going to go through an auction house to do it, and just a local online one... the amount they are getting for boxes of commons is ridiculous...

The goal is to have a couple of shoeboxes of PC cards left at the end.

If I think there's anything that would be of interest to folks here before I purge or send to COMC, I'll be sure to post it up.

My goal.....Just to get back to the Toronto Expo,for real( no offence virtual). The Fall might be the realistic shot and even then it's up in the air.
 
1. As it relates to my Larry Murphy collection, if my count is right, I currently have 878 unique items. I would like to both increase and decrease that number. If I could unload the PC cards I want to, that would put me down closer to 800. Yet I also have many cards on my wantlist that could bump that number up again. Some are realistic, some aren't at all, and some should be but haven't been. This year has been difficult for me. Even the smalls have given me trouble, but I will continue to look for those value picks.

2. I want to streamline not only my Murphy PC but continue to squeeze some money out of my extras and unrelated cards. Would be nice to have some extra hobby dollars or just dollars in general.

3. I don't expect to "finish" my Motown Madness nameplate in 2021, but I'm only missing 3 (half) letters, so finding one more would be a real treat.

4. I want to land at least one of these 3 premium cards:

5. Finish off my newly-formed Brent Bilodeau PC (easier said than done when you're banking on a UD 1/1 buyback to show up) and supplement it with more signed cards where possible.

6. Putter away at upgrading my 92/93 Cup champ Habs signed rookie collection.

7. Possibly dig up and try to add to a few small player rookie/signed rookie projects from the 2000s.

8. Continue being part of this great hobby community whether I'm collecting much or not. This place is always a great haven, especially during such a crappy year as 2020.

For 2020 I didn't set any hobby goals as those have been completed.

2021? Try to decide when will be the time start cutting down / selling my collection? Not getting any younger and my wife, daughter, and grandkids have no interest in sport cards.
 
2020 has been the most fun I've ever had in the hobby since the early 90s, while also being the most introverted I have ever been in my life with regard to the hobby.

I attribute much of that to my friendships with others who have similar interests/goals/ideologies about the hobby, my sons both having a massive resurgence in interest in the hobby and putting together some really fun PCs to work on, and, most importantly, being on the frontlines of this pandemic. This hobby has been a blessing and wonderful outlet for me to decompress after long, hard, miserable, tiring shifts at work. I can't, and won't, share some of the heartbreaking stuff I have seen, it's truly humbling as a human being. Just know this hobby has been wonderful for many folks like myself in similar positions.

And it's also been terrific because it's not forced or contrived, I'm not out to impress or be an influencer. Everything we continue to do is for us, and our happiness and collecting goals, we don't feel like we have to do anything or be known as anything, we are just who want to be, and collect what we want to collect. One day we may be chasing a crazy high end card of superstar, the next day we may be after a parallel of someone else we like who's a bench player, role player, 4th liner, and they all mean the SAME to us. And that's how the hobby should be approached to have any kind of long tenure and truly enjoy it.

I think in 2020 we have all seen (and we are all guilty, including a bit myself) of getting caught up in the hype machine and dollars and cents to some degree this year. But if you really enjoy this hobby, you'll find the fun in just the cards themselves when you don't put price tags on things and collect them for whatever reason that is?

We will continue to collect and enjoy it that way; privately with my sons as we are having immense fun. I'll probably also continue to regress here and take more time away from the boards and social media aspects of the hobby, to put that time into the actual collecting and my sons. So if you don't see me active here, PM me or shoot me an email if you have some fun cards we may enjoy! In short, 2021 will be no different than this year, and many prior years now for myself and my sons, FUN.

I can relate to your post 1000 percent! I am a hobby purist and collect for the pure joy of collecting. I think I am the only person in the hobby that inserts nice cards of players into video games! lol. All kidding aside I learned this year more than any other that the hobby is about the amazing people(and not so amazing people) you meet in the hobby and there is no more joy in sharing your collection with others and seeing the happiness that you and they receive from sports cards!!!
 
My goal for the short term is to acquire a mint Ovechkin Young Guns card. One of the few big cards on my list I wasn't able to lock down this year.
 
The tail end of 2020 was when I got serious about collecting hockey cards, started off a little all over the place but I think I’ve dialled in what I’m looking to collect going forward. I’ve found a couple of players I love PCing (Victor Hedman and Erik Karlsson) as well as some sets that I enjoy collecting from.

I’m coming over from the Pokemon world and concepts like rookie cards and true rookie cards aren’t really as much of a thing. Started off with Young Guns as they’re the iconic rookie card but I just didn’t click with it. I’ve always enjoyed the look and hobby place of rookie autos like the Contenders autos in football and basketball. Baseball’s 1st Bowman Chrome autos/Topps Chrome autos are another good example, the iconic rookie auto is just really appealing to me as a concept. That’s how I decided to mainly collect Future Watch Autos. I also really like Ice Premieres and Cup RPAs but those can get seriously pricey as well as be rather inaccessible given that many of the top ones are serial #’d to 99. Future Watch Autos are both more accessible and a little more affordable while checking off all the boxes of what I’d like to collect. It’s a win-win for me.

OPC Platinum rookies are also something I’ll probably collect a bit on the side, specifically the rainbow parallels. I’m a sucker for the basic shiny cards like the Prism silvers, Optic holos, etc. I don’t particularly like colours so I decided to just collect the basic rainbow parallels. I was intrigued by the autographed ones but I didn’t like the fact that some years didn’t have a rainbow auto’d parallel (2014/15 and 2018/19 I think) and I also wanted to collect something that wasn’t auto’d because it’d be too similar to the Future Watches.

With all that out of the way, my hobby goals going into 2021 are to keep expanding my Future Watch collection and to find some PC cards that I’m currently missing. I’ve got a spreadsheet with the names of the players I’m going after and I’ve currently checked off about 20% of them. Some of them are most likely never going to be achieved for budgetary reasons (Crosby, Ovechkin) while others I might be able to get to through some luck (McDavid, Matthews, MacKinnon). As for the PC cards, I’m quite content with where my Hedman PC is, I’m really only missing his Young Guns High Gloss and who knows when that’ll pop up again. As for the Karlsson side of things, I’m missing a bit more: his Ice Premieres Patch Auto /10, Ultimate Collection RPA /25, and his Young Guns High Gloss. I also don’t have shields of either player but I’m quite willing to accept that those are most likely never going to be in my collection. That’s okay! White whales are nice to have as they keep you going and who knows, maybe I’ll luck into one some day. That’s the joy of collecting for me.

I’ll sign off here with one last thought. One thing I’ve really enjoyed about collecting hockey cards is I’m able to create a sort of personal Hall of Fame about the sport and hobby if you will. Lots of players in my collection won’t make the actual Hall but they’ve all been a part of the history of hockey and more specifically my history of hockey. There’s something truly enjoyable about that and I think it’s what will keep me coming back to collecting hockey cards.
 
My goal is the same as 2020.I would really like to buy the last game used jersey ,that I think I need to to make my Scottie Upshall collection complete.
I am looking for a game used Milwaukee Admiral jersey,Scottie Upshall. At least I can hope.Thanks.

2021- 1. Same as above, I want to collect slow but continue to get what I like Hall of Famers and Montreal Canadiens.
2. Just have fun
3. Add players game used I never had, Frank Patrick, Frank Nighbor, Toe Blake, just to name some.
4. Keep adding Hall of Famers autographs and game used I don't have in my collection currently
