TradeCentre: Offseason Deals

Grabner Bernier and the 25th pick to Florida for Ballard and Oreskovic. Conditional on whether the player the Canucks want is still available. Bad trade for the Canucks if you ask me...

I really like this deal, Ballard hasn't gotten a lot of attention playing in Florida and Phoenix before that but he is really, really good. And he's signed long term at not a bad number at all.

Not really into the business side of hockey--
Please explain why a team would trade for someone and than buy them out..
does it mean he's still their property but not have a contract?

Coyotes did not want Vandermeer. The buyout for O'Sullivan is cheaper than the buyout for Vandermeer, so the Coyotes actually save money by doing this.

And, after all, it is not their money they are working with; it belongs to the other 29 teams. The whole thing stinks to begin with.

He's a liability everytime he steps on the ice, I doubt you'll ever see him in a Caps jersey....

He's only been given a real chance in the NHL once, back in 07/08. He played 61 games, had 6 points, 100 pims, and was only a -4. I watched him play a ton of games in the WHL, and he's actually a pretty skilled player for a tough guy. Not sure why you think he's a liability, he's not as bad as a ton of players currently earning an NHL paycheck. He has a U18 gold medal on his resume, 4 points in 7 games for Canada that year. I think he's exactly what the Caps needed, a guy that doesn't make a ton of money, is willing to go with anyone at any time, and can play the role without being an idiot and taking selfish penalties at the wrong time like Brashear.
