World Hockey Championships

Sorry, you miss read the thread. It's about the world championship. Country against country, not NHL biases. In case you are unfamiliar with my antiamerican NHL views I'm a NYI fan, yup, an American team. Do I like B. Nelson more than C. Perry? A million times over!!! Is my favourite goalie I the tournament play for Germany? Yup again. I'm just saying as a Canadian you "should" go for your country in a country vs country tournament and it sickens me when people dump their whole country for a player or two! This American loving, German supporting, 2nd favourite player of all time is Slovakian says , go Canada go!

While I'm still cheering for Canada, I have to completely disagree with this statement. Blindly supporting something just because it bears the Canadian flag would be ignorant. If the team was made up of a bunch of scumbags like Perry, Marchand, etc there's no way I'd cheer for them. Now, just because I dislike 2 players won't stop me because I know the rest of them will represent my country with dignity.

But please Canada homers, get over yourselves, you have some real dirtballs up there, like anywhere else, you're not immune to things.

I don't think most Canadian hockey fans feel otherwise. Matt Cooke is Canadian, as are Steve Downie, Steve Ott, Raffi Torres and Max Lapierre. They're all dirty players who I cant stand, and I would have a hard time cheering for them even with the red and white.

Perry is actually more frustrating because there's no reason why he has to resort to that type of play. He's got talent most guys would kill for, and for much of that game yesterday he was our best player. Then he goes and does something stupid like that play with Laine...I'm happy he's on this team for his talent, but he wouldn't have been my pick as captain.

"The Americans"? Is this board becoming segregated like that movie "Ruskies"?

Be careful before flinging that poo poo.;) It's funny hearing people (Canadians) on here say they will only cheer for Canadian teams in the playoffs, people only posting Canadian team-specific info, the whole mod team being Canadian......

The bias is nauseating. All "The Americans" here give love to Canadian teams and players because we just identify hockey players and teams as good or bad, because we are just great hockey fans not USA-only hockey fans. I can talk hockey on a level with any well-versed Canadian. Heck most of my favorite players have always been Canadians and Euros, I don't see flags, I just see talent.

But I digress.

No one said it was "ok" for him to rip or not rip his country, the current discussion here is about Corey Perry (Marchand?) being a dirty player up to his usual slimeball antics on the ice. So what say you about that?

Geez dude, could that horse get any higher?

Craig, I know you and a lot of others don't feel this way, hence why I put Canada followed by the word "HOMERS". There are quite a few of those types round these boards for multiple countries.

That said, I have made a lot of great friends here who ARE Canadian and DON'T get so bloody biased that all they see is Maple Leaves. And I respect their loyalty and allegiances to to their country as they do to mine because we can talk point/counterpoint with logic and quantifiable facts, not chest-thumping emotion.

You guys know me, I love the Kings but I am the first to put them on blast when it's blatantly obvious they deserve it. I am also an American and passionate about my country and national teams. I am also an American who is not so ignorant to believe my country is superior at everything and to be dismissive of all that is not American. Pathetic and close-minded are these people and sadly it is the reason our world is not as progressive as it could be.

Geez dude, could that horse get any higher?

How am I on a high-horse? Because I state over and over how much I respect the Canadian/Euro players/teams in hockey? Because I can back up my points with other peoples statements/facts? Because I applaud someone who is Canadian, for not being so biased that he can admit someone on his team is out of line? I don't just throw darts at the board out of thin air? I feel I am fair and judicious.

I'm done, GO CANADA!

Sigh.........

plain and simple the play by perry was dirty but man is he getting slammed on this board . maybe silent brown can show him this thread and see what some of us say and thinks about his actions

About being captain, ......... I think perry is the only member on HOCKEY Canada current roster that has successfully won at every level.................. and never said no tp represent Canada when asked to
world juniors
Olympics
etc

Maybe it was a thank you for your services type thing like captain Canada ( ryan smyth )

Love him or hate him but you gotta love a guy ( or woman ) who represents his/her country no matter what reason it is

Not sure why you completely disagree. I think I said the exact same thing you did! Lol

Sorry, but you just seem like you're patting yourself on the back/applauding yourself in pretty much every post you make. Being unbiased towards a thing/person/team/country isn't an accomplishment. It's just how things should be.

I don't need to pat myself on the back, facts and quotes speak for themselves, right?

I'm just reiterating things and also yes, getting a chance to reply to people who "reply" to me? So it's ok for one and not another? Talk about bias!

And why isn't everyone here unbiased? Don't even get me started on the immense bias here and the head offenders...............Food for thought.

Maybe pretentious was the correct word? Can't think of others who go to such great lengths to explain why their thoughts and opinions are valid while other opinions are lesser, followed by endless sarcastic emojis.

Anyways, sorry to deviate from the thread. I have such a hard time getting interested in the WC, probably because so many players opt out AND it's coming at a time where players have a full season of wear and tear on them. I think there's just too many tournaments, and I'd be ok with just the WJC and the Olympics.

I'm with you on the WC's. I used to look forward to this tournament every year. No one in the US would televise the games until a couple years ago, and even then, all we get are replays of the US games sometimes a day or two after the game actually happened. We don't have the TV exposure like you guys do for obvious reasons, but I would find a live stream or radio call on the internet so I could enjoy the WC's. It was one of my favorite tourney's as so many players we don't get to see on this side of the pond show up and play their hearts out. There really is a ton of talent over there that for whatever reason don't make the jump to the NHL.

However, this year has been a huge bummer. USA Hockey needs to make some changes, while I enjoy watching some of the young guns play for us, it sucks to lose games because our most "veteran" players are Matt Hendricks, Nick Foligno, Patrick Maroon, and our leader on defense is the ultra skilled Connor Murphy (to be fair he's played very well). Where are some of our young d-men like Seth Jones, Jacob Trouba, Torey Krug, Justin Faulk, Cam Fowler, etc? I won't get into the forwards, that would take forever, but shame on you Jack Eichel, you milked the USA Hockey system for everything it was worth and then turned down their invitation this year? McDavid showed up for his country, where are you?

So many of our "normal" guys turned down the invitation for a number of different reasons. The two biggest factors seem to be:

1. Just eliminated from the playoffs, need to recover
2. Sick of USA Hockey not really caring about this tourny and using it as an evaluation type process instead of trying to win

It certainly bums me out that certain players say no, especially those who didn't even make the playoffs or were bounced early in the first round. But, I guess I get it for the older guys, the timing is horrible after the 82+ game grind, and when you make millions of dollars, do you really want to head overseas and risk an injury when there is zero compensation to play in that tourney? My understanding is USA Hockey doesn't even buy them a plane ticket, the players all pay their own way for everything? If that's really true, I fully respect the guys who show up. Especially the one line we have who are all college kids from The Michigan Wolverines.

The US is nowhere near Canada in terms of available "depth" to choose from, but there's no reason for us to have the youngest team in the tournament unless they are doing it intentionally. If USA Hockey really doesn't care about this tourney or want to use it as some evaluation deal, I'd rather see them form a team with players from the US who are currently playing in a league overseas, or foot the bill and send the top college players to evaluate.

Rant over, I'm just glad they are finally televising the U18 World's here in the US, I just hope they start showing more games and not just the US matches. Yes, I'm one of those crazy guys who enjoys watching Switzerland vs Belarus, those kids play hard and are fun to watch. If someone in the US would televise the non-US games I'm sure I would enjoy the WC's more. I'd love to see the other teams play for a change.

If we're getting rid of tournaments, let's cut out the World Juniors (U-20) and the U-18, or more importantly, focus them on what they are supposed to be about - driving development of hockey players in countries, and not a money making cow for the IIHF.

Personally, I'd get rid of the Olympics too - it's only about making money for the IOC and the NHL/NHLPA - that is the only reason NHL'ers go. The offshoot is that we, the fans, get best on best hockey, but that's not the driving reason why it happens.

You have to keep the World Championships because it's the only place to grow the game and give opportunities for teams in the Division IV through to the lower end of Division I to compete on an international level.

If it's difficult to understand where I'm coming from, ask yourself if you are a HOCKEY fan, or an NHL fan - they are two, very distinct and different things.

Wow interesting thread and love how this always goes off the rails..

I gotta say is that I will support my country's team regardless if they have a roster full of Brad Marchands/Bertuzzis/Nedveds or not. It's that simple.

Do I care who is on the team. No not really. That's up to the Hockey brass who makes those choices. I am not in their camp nor do they give two ****s what my opinion is. I am fine with that. You wear the flag, you have my back. Plain and simple.

WC is great because I haven't watched more than 15 minutes of any of the play off games in the NHL this year simply because no CDN teams are in it.

Am I a hockey fan: Yes
Am I a hockey fan that is country agnostic: No not really. I cheer for Canadian Teams and for my country.
Am I an NHL fan: Yes.

Long story short, I don't require validation of my thoughts or preferences in life. I am and others should also be secure versus insecure in the choices they make. In short, the only validation in life i need is if I am sleeping in the dog house or not at home. Other than that, I am as happy as a pig in **** can be.

OH ****, I think i was hangry, I better go eat lunch.

Crazy upset this morning, can't believe this team took out the Czech's. Auston Matthews with the GWG in a shootout. I didn't think they would make the playoff round so this is a nice bonus.

Loving it, Matthews had a great game. Got to love how the kid handled the pressure in such a big game. He will look deadly in a Leafs uniform next year. Finally I will have another Leaf centre to collect besides retired ones lol

That was a good game, and Matthews and Larkin stood out for me among the Americans. I don't think they had much in the way of expectations given the youth you talked about in a previous post, so it's a great showing.

Here's hoping Canada can win today, so we have a Canada-USA semifinal. After that beatdown by Finland, though, I'm just hoping our team shows up today.

Canada showed up and then some, holy smokes, 6-0 whitewashing!

Unless our goalie stands on his head, this could be a rough game for the US.

I don't think I saw any true "star" player score for Canada in their last game and 6 different guys scored as well. Scary depth...............

Hope it's close but the US team has a vast discrepancy in talent. Good luck to everyone's teams tomorrow.
