Anyone else disappointed with 2020-21 UD Series 1?

Hey there. It's been a while everyone. Hope you are all well.

I haven't broken a box in ages. I have been deep into my collecting of Czech goalie game worn jerseys, but loved the idea of possibly pulling a Lafreniere and I was due to open some wax. Its been too long lol.

Cracked six boxes of 2020-21 Series 1, and I have never seen a more brutal coalition in my life. These all came from the same case and I ended up with so many doubles of Young Guns and also doubles and triples of all the inserts as well. This is an absolutely embarrassing display of workmanship on Upper Decks part. I also ended up with a pack that had two cards replaced with pack filler style cards and I was shorted some Young Guns as well. This isn't anything to do with sour grapes that I didn't pull a Lafreniere, that is part of the gamble, but this absolutely sucked as far as how the cards were coalited and I don't feel I got my moneys worth at all.
I also have a case that I haven't cracked yet, and am afraid to even think what brutal quality assurance lives within that case.

This also is not a one off. The LCS out here did a group break, and they had the same exact grief with their case. UD has pushed me out the door, again. I so looked forward to breaking these boxes. I'll grab the odd single I need for my PC and that will be it. This is why there needs to be some competition in the hobby. A monopoly never works.

Just my two cents. Comments?

Sorry to hear about your poor collation of your boxes, brutal.

I don't know what to recommend for your case. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I would reach out to UD QA - [email protected] - with the name of the CDD that you bought the cards from, your receipt and box/case ID for the box with the bad cards (as well as the case ID if you have it) and they will likely help you out.

On here and on various FB groups, I've seen a few issues with the product thus far but better that they hear it from you direct.

The QA team is generally excellent in my experience.

I have seen a lot of posts on social media of people pulling both the Lafreniere Young Guns and canvas in the same box. It doesn’t seem to be short printed, which would have been an interesting move on UDs part.

This is an issue for sure with whatever came to my LCS. Rumor has it there is a lot of this issue out there in the hobby.

Not sure what to do either lol. Thanks

I may do that. I'm sure they are aware. I'm just waiting to see how many other collectors had the same problem to see if I am just one of the lucky ones. Thanks for the help!!

UD in past seeded their Young Guns in a specific run. From what I have heard they are completely random on seeding in boxes/cases. I unfortunately doubt they will do anything on this for you.

Last year I broke five cases of series two and in the last case I did not get a complete set of Young Guns as I was missing four cards two of which was Makar and Dach. In all the cases that I had ever opened I had always gotten a complete set of Young Guns. The case was way after the product was released so I thought maybe it was just the last of product run and it was what is was but I contacted Upper Deck just in case.

I got a reply that Upper Deck had made a change in the way UD 1 and UD 2 are packed out. If you opened a lot of boxes in the past you could figure out the pattern of which Young Guns were in a box. If I remember correctly if you hit Ronalds Kenins you knew Connor McDavid was in the box.

I have read on this site about complaints about the way you could "pack search" by knowing how the Young Guns were packaged. So Upper Deck made the change and it was now random packing and what I was told was the you would no longer be "guaranteed" a complete set of Young Guns in a case. I asked if UD had made a press release of this change and was told, no they didn't as less than ten collectors had contacted them about not getting a complete set of YGs in a case so they were just moving forward.

To address the product I broke two cases and some boxes yesterday and there was not any damage to the cards that I pulled. A couple had dinged corners but that was my fault in the way I ripped open the pack.

One of the case was missing the acetate Young Guns card but it had two autographs instead of one, so it worked out I guess.

Good luck if you break the case! Hope it is better

I watched a break last night with 3 Lafreniere Young Guns and a Canvas in the same case. And yes, the Canvas was in the same box as one of the regular Young Guns.

This is the second time I have heard this information about getting a full set of Young Guns from a case. I'm thinking I may not even open the case. But, the way they are collating it leaves something to be desired. Thanks for the input, appreciated.

I would love to support my local shop, but I refuse to give them 130.00 for a box of something I’ve bought every year the last 2 decades for under $70. Can’t believe I won’t be opening any series one for the first time since inception. What a year.

I opened 3 boxes from the same case and ended up with 3 duplicate YG's. Kind of annoying but thems the breaks (literally).

At least one duplicate was Byram. Would have been nice if it was Laf.

One thing I did notice was that all my Canvas cards came out of the top row of packs or bottom row of packs.... seemed odd.

Just finished opening two boxes, tiny sample size but I didn't get any dupes of inserts or ygs. I'd heard about duplicates/collation issues so I was happy I didn't get any.

So now if you want a guaranteed set of YGs on release day you have to get 2 cases instead of 1 ??
Someone at UD is getting a raise if they didn’t already yeeeehawww!

I bought 4 boxes , store allocation, since I did not know you could pre order a case!
I got my 4 boxes and quite happy with the break - ONE LaF YG and YG C/List.
The rest, one UD French version per box AND one variation - Nylander BASE!
AND A Connor ....... as CANVAS YG.

IF you want to hit for the fences, keep ripping HOBBY boxes as the price is already going up on re orders, I would prefer buying Retail boxes which is much cheaper.
The gamble is there to choose BUT I prefer buying singles off the 'bay.
Your choice and money to spend OR ....... ?

I busted 4 cases yesterday, and ended up with anywhere from 3-8 of each Young Guns. Fortunately one of the players I hit 8 of was Lafreniere. There seems to be less of a guarantee of getting a set per case than there used to be.

In my case, I did get a full set of Young Guns - which is the ultimate goal. I did get one Clear Cut and two French Young Guns. And pretty much hit everything that should be expected by the numbers - Clear Cut Foundation, HOF update/100, three Exclusives/100, two autos, Hertl Diecut Worldwide and plenty of jerseys - 6 regular, and then one Rookie Retrospective, and Debut Date.

I was very pleased to pull my first Young Guns exclusive (Morgan Geekie), but unfortunately it was cut improperly. If I hadn't pulled it out of a pack, I would have thought it was trimmed. Oh well.

Half way through my case and have 31 of the 50 YG with 7 dupes (one box had 7 YG). The box my wife busted had the Lafreniere YG. Other highlights so far, four Game Jerseys, one Signature Sensation, a couple Acetate YG, one French YG, and a Clearcut Foundations.
Complaints so far, in many packs the cards were stuck together, dinged corners that seemed to go in the pack that way since they were the same number, and several boxes missing inserts that were suppose to be one to a box.

Bought 3 boxes from MLS in Calgary. Opened 2 of them and got a Lafreniere yg and ygc. Unfortunately for my brother he's getting the other shipped to him.

I did get a lot of busted corners on my base cards and foil bits all over some of the ygs.
