Bertuzzi's a Flame! - 1 year contract

tanguay's a different story though..
he was expected to produce...specially with his 5 million dollar salary.
if bert can put up some decent numbers, he'll be a steal at under 2 million

The thing is, he did. His first year in Calgary produced career year numbers, but the only thing people focus on is the one bad year that followed. Kipprusoff stunk up the joint last year, but nobody was calling for his head on a silver platter.

bertuzzi - comeback player of the year ..
hahah jk..

ill be happy with 20 goals

Don't hold your breath on that one. 14 goals last year and that was with a fair amount of PP time and playing alongside Getzlaf and Perry. Somehow I doubt Bert will be skating with Iggy.

Bert had 40 points in 68 games last year... that's not bad. As mentioned, he's getting paid third line money and is an adequate replacement for what Owen Nolan brought to the team last year. If he performs past that level, the Flames got a bargain - if he lives up to management expectations he'll be worth it.

As for the media circus, well, can't do much about that...

Because Kiprusoff has done so much for us in the last 4 years, Tanguay couldn't say the same.

As for Bertuzzi, not sure I like this deal. I mean he can still put up 40 - 50 points, even though people like to bash on him thats good production for under 2 million. I never really heard about Bertuzzi being a locker room cancer, but everyone knows Iggy is the man in the locker room, and when you come to Calgary you respect that. We haven't had locker room trouble since Savard.

The real funny part is watching Canucks fans who defended him now blast him.

That's about all Bert is good for anymore. He was painful to watch on Anaheim's PP last year because all he could pretty much do was sit in front of the net and attempt to blot out the sun. Get used to seeing glimmers of Bertuzzi's former self. The problem will be that they happen way too infrequently.

That's pretty much what is expected of Bertuzzi on the power play. He's not out there to dazzle you deking in and out of players. You throw Bert in front of the net with Iggy feeding Phaneuf for a slapper and I guarantee you that Phaneufs' goals will increase this year. Salaries are NOT just based on a players individual stats.

Bert isn't the player he use to be by far. Show me how many 225-240lb men can keep up with the speed of todays game. He, just like Holmstrom in Detroit, are there to create havoc in front of the goalie. Unfortunately, when Bert's back was bad (last year in Vancouver in particular), he wasn't able to park himself in front of the net and take the abuse anymore. Anyone who watched him play on a regular basis can tell you that very few guys in the league take a beating like he does. As long as his back can hold up (it hasn't caused him to miss any games in the last year I don't think), I think he will be very effective in Calgary. For 2 million, I believe that Calgary did good.

PS - Of course I am bias towards him, but not totally unrealistic :) As for a "media circus", I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as people think. A few years ago, yes, but really, it's not much of a story anymore. I doubt you will ever hear Bert talk about anything other than what is happening NOW with the Calgary Flames.

One last thing....does anyone think him and Phaneuf will be roomies on the road...lol.

I know people can't stand Bert but financially he's getting paid less than Nolan and he's gonna do about as much.

Um, he's not gonna lead in the locker room like Nolan, he's not gonna fight like Nolan, he's not going to kill penalties like Nolan, he's not gonna take faceoff's like Nolan.
And to think Bertuzzi was in any Red Wing plans regardless of Hossa is a joke.

Quite true, then again, fairly or unfairly, he wasn't given much of a chance to either. I'm certainly not defending his play, which was atrocious last year. Even defensively, which has usually been his strong suit, he looked lost last year, turning over the puck wayyyyyyy too much. Bottom line is, he was misused in Calgary, and I knew he'd play horribly under Mike Keenan, since in reality very few people seem to enjoy success under Iron Mike. He bounced from playing on a line with Iggy and Conroy/Langkow, down to playing with David Moss and Matt Lombardi...sometimes all in the same game....his career stats show that nobody should have expected any more then 70-75 pts from him, but right from day one, Flames fans expected 100-110 pts. The sad thing? Habs fans are going to expect even more, which is unfair. He's much better suited to a 2nd line, out of the spotlight role, not a 1st line sniper role, which is what people seem to expect for 5mil a season.

I can honestly say that I haven't seen a lot of TRUE Canuck fans that have turned their head the other way and blast him now for his previous actions. Bert signing in Calgary will be the thing that might make them do it though :)

People always talked about him being a "cancer" in the lockerroom, but I have never heard one of his former teammates EVER coming forward to say this is true....NOT ONCE. Not all team mates like one another...that's just a fact, same as you and me at our work. I think people just like to cling to that because it gives them something more negative to say about him.

I now hate my former favourite player??? :|

Ex Canuck star now Flame... can't comprehend...

I guess Ken Holland lies...

You're mind is made up on Bertuzzi...we get it. Pittsburgh was also very interested as well as a few other teams.

When have you EVER seen a player openly come out and say someone was a cancer or a bad teammate. Even if they were no one would say anything. So maybe that's why you never heard that "NOT ONCE." But Bertuzzi was KNOWN to pout in Vancouver and at the end the only friend he had was Naslund. So certainly you can say he has been a distraction in the lockerroom in the past.

And obviously don't you think if Detroit really wanted him, he'd be there? Talk is talk, was there any contract offer? And was Hossa signing the real reason they didn't sign Bert?

The only vested interest I have is that I love it from a perspective of an Edmonton fan - I just love seeing that Sutter is so set in his ways that even the Flyers are adapting to the new brand of hockey and are looking like visionaries compared to the Flames.

Set in his ways? This year, Sutter decided to get younger and faster. The only signing that doesn't fall under this category is Bertuzzi. I think you are just bitter about losing Glencross :p.

What you have said is all totally true. Personally I never expect more than 80 points, and overall I was happy with Tanguay. I think Calgary/Keenan expects a certain style out of their players, and unless your willing to take someone's head off, you aren't that player. I will miss Tanguay and I wish him the best in Montreal, as I think its a situation designed for him to excel in.

I should have said who now will blast him, not who now blast him. My apologies.

I like the deal. IMO a better and cheaper replacement to Nolan. If he can score 20 goals I'll be happy. I can't see him being a cancer in the lockerroom with Iginla being there and leading the way cause you know Iggy has the coach and GM's ear.

Let's hope. If anybody can do it, it would be Iggy. He's one of the few Captains in the NHL who can back up his words with actions, either on the ice or off it. When you're the most complete player in the NHL and garner the kind of respect and acclaim that he does, a lot of people will listen.

From my Oilers fan perspective, I think this picture parody pretty much sums up how much I'm enjoying this trade right about now....at the expense of Flame fans...:)

The Flames equipment manager now needs to stock extra tissues and Bertz back pills for each game. But in his defense, I'm sure he will still put up points for the Flamers.

Bert needs this and he's goin to gel quick with the flames. Welcome back the Bert of old......He'll pile up the points
