Crack Them Slabbed Cards Open

I hear you, and you're right. I just honestly believe that it should have graded higher and I am afraid that if I leave it in its original slab, the grader will be biased.

What to do... what to do...

I took a kovalchuk rookie out of a PSA slab before with a set of pliers. The 4 raised edges of the case can be snapped off and then the two covers can be freed without putting the card in any danger...

Yeah i hear you. You have a bit of a conundrum. Good to know you like graded stuff. It just makes me wonder sometimes, with this kind of thing being an occassional occurance, how reliable the popn reports actually are. When you resubmitt to PSA that exact card will essentially have two serial numbers, and will increase the popn. In most cases the reports should be fairly accurate though. Could you report it to PSA that you are breaking it open (and then not tell them you plan to resubmitt)? :)

Ive popped them open with a flat headed screw driver with ease. They then pop back together and you can put your own label in the holder for a cool looking card protector. Kinda personalize it. Of course I did it to those trashy Collexctors edge Graded cards from football in the late 90's early 2000's which were wortheless, lol.

psa excepts flips back from open slabs and will adjust the pop report if u send them in. The way i look at population reports is, thats not really how many of a particular card that is out there, but it is more like how many cards where graded that particular grade.

Thanks for the info. After I have it graded again, I'll send in the old graded slip.

There is a tab about 3/4 the way up a PSA card.. I took a screwdriver and hammer just tapped the screwdriver lightly and the case splits in half perfectly.. I have done this way many times

I have used a powerized Dremal tool. I like to use a small sanding disk on it and go around the edges of the card to release it from the case.

slabbed card question

Hi everybody-

I was able to get the last Black Diamond I needed for a set, the only problem is that its been graded (9) and slabbed...I'd like to remove it from the plastic holder so I can store it with the other three. Question is: what's the best way to open up these Beckett holders w/o damaging the card inside? Or should I just leave it alone? Thanks for any help!:)

I crack open all my ITG cards that ar ein my PC. I like all my cards to be in the one-touches. I keep the certs in the one touch with the card.

I use a flathead and a hammer. I go around the top of the slab and crack away the overlap. Then I slide the flathead between the two sides and twist the screwdriver to pry open the slab. Have cracked around 15 cards out and have never done any damage.

This is exactly how I do it. Usually the case stays in tact this way too (although I haven't figured out why this may be useful yet).

it depends on the holder.

for psa/ksa/sgc, you can just take a flathead and pry the 2 slabs apart slowly through that layer sticking the 2 plastic pieces together.

for bgs ones, i found it is the best to saw through the label part, then use flathead and pry the 2 plastic pieces open.

my record for opening up a psa holder was less than 1 minute.

I have a question. Where is the "sweet spot" for cracking a PSA holder? I have a couple coming in and would like to crack to submit to BGS.

I think they're part of the card itself

Based on my slab-cracking experience, I can tell you with 100% certainty that the card and the slab are two totally separate and distinct objects. ;)

I drill small holes in each corner and use a machine screws to "push" the two pieces apart. No shards to damage you (or the card). Works every time.

Takes a little longer, but zero risk.
