Have you ever sold a card to the player on the card?

As soon as I saw this, I thought of this thread:

Turned out not to be Bill himself, but still pretty funny...

I have sold a Ryan Getzlaf jersey card to someone who had the last name of Getzlaf. They lived in Western Canada. I had asked them if they were related and they told me that Ryan was his cousin and Ryan tried to collect cards of himself and gets him to just buy them.

We made a deal and I sent another jersey card to him and he sent me a Calgary Hitmen auto postcard/picture and Ryan personalized it himself. It took me a while to get my end and just assumed that I had been taken. I still have it in my PC and it will never leave. Not worth much money at all but a cool story for me.

Very cool! I just sold a Getzlaf auto /10 to him a few weeks ago but didn't ask for anything in return. Cool story though and glad he was so accomodating for you!

I once had Igor Larionov sign his 2006-07 ITG International Ice card for me. He told me he had never seen the card and didn't have it in his collection... I told him I had another one and gave it to him a few days later (he was in town for a tournament his son played in).

Scott Hartnell is a collector for sure, bought an early 2000's UD Jersey card of himself from me. Also, lots of parents / family members: Hecht, Puppa, Janik, come to mind.

Just sold a Kadri YG to an A. Kadri in Alberta. Probably a coincidence, but I also sold some cards to a Steve Holt. STEVE HOLT!

Ah yes...Leo Puppa who is buying a copy of every card for each grandchild. Every time he buys a card from me he sends his wantlist.

On the other side of the coin, I buy cards of players with the same name as myself. :)

haha I was looking through Hockey's Future and came across a kid named Matt Tomkins....My name is Matt Tompkins.

If he ever makes it to the NHL you better bet I"m PCing him LOL

lol My name is Ameet and unless I collect Cricket cards, there is a snowball's chance in hell that I will find someone with my name on the North American sports card scene.

I did the same thing a few years back with Jordan Caron. (My name is Jonathan Caron... So Jo Caron... Close enough!)

However, being a Habs fan, I ended up hating the kid, so the collection didn't last past his junior years ;-)

Use to buy a lot of Trevor Wasylyk cards, didn't sell them just give to his parents. Even though there were only two product of his cards. One from the UD 95-96 set Programme of Excellence and the other from Bowmans set.

I recently sold a 12-13 Artifacts Triple jersey card to a Scott Hartnell that featured him along with JVR & Voracek!

That made me laugh only because I feel your pain...

A few years back, I sold some "unproduced" 7th Inning Sketch Lindros cards to someone with the last name "Lindros". They said they were buying stuff for The Big E himself!

Last year, I sold a Vezina Pad card to a guy with the last name "Vezina" in Florida. I asked him if he was related and he said that Georges Vezina was his Great Grandfather. Pretty neat...

My best two stories - I was at the pre las game luncheon at the Winnipeg arena. I was working media so in theory getting autographs was verboten except most media were doing some sort of memory, either signatures or photos.
I brought a jets card of John Ferguson with me to get signed. It was one of the team issued police cards.

Fergie looked at the card and said he didn't have any of them.

Yes, the Jets GM didn't have any of the team issued card.

He was happy to sign mine but told me a story about how he never ended up with a copy of the card. I told him I had a spare and would be more than happy to give him a second. He insisted on paying me for it, so he gave me a buck for it. He was overjoyed to have it.

My second story I've told a few times. During a conference call in 03-04 I asked Marty St. Louis about collecting cards. He said he used to collect Gretz and Lemieux. A few months later I knew I'd see Marty at the Pearson awards. I had a chance to chat with him and I pulled out a card case.

Marty said he's not signing today, but I said I had no intention of autograph hounding. I reminded him about our conversation and gave him the holder which had a Gretzky and one of his cards. The look in his eyes was of pure excitement.
One of the greatest moments of my life

It used to happen a lot more but I think most of todays players either do it online or get their family members to do it. If you went into Joe Daleys card shop in Winnipeg during the nineties you could sell him his 68/69 OPC RC. At one of the Winnipeg shows in the early nineties some Brandon Wheat Kings attended and Wade Redden was buying up his RCs. Colton Orr's grandfather lived in our neighbourhood and used to buy his RCs. I now live in Ottawa and have meet family members of Derek Roy and Marc Methot who often go to the montly show looking for their cards

I sold six different cards to Scott Hartnell, with the last being the 2000-01 Topps Gold Label Class 2 Gold /66. I sent him an email asking if he knew what cards he needed, he said "no" so I made up a quick player checklist for him and sent it off to him.

We have exchanged a few emails back and forth and he seems like the most genuine guy out there. I would collect his cards, but I do not have deep enough pockets.

Never to the player himself. Mervyn Cheechoo (Jon's father) made a habit of stopping by at Expo, and apparently thought well enough of the experience that he brought Joe Thornton's parents (VERY nice people) to shop with me.

I don't think he's been mentioned yet, but I sold several Pacific parallel cards to a relative of Brian Rafalski back in the 99-01 timeframe.
