As for the offer sheet rumour to Draisaitl, it's not going to happen. There's an unwritten rule amongst GM's that you don't go after RFA's. And if you do, be sure when your team has an RFA, the team you screwed is going to give an offer sheet.

And the last offer sheet that was given was 4 years ago.

On top of that, which team has $9M of cap space available? Not many, and certainly not the playoff teams. So it'll be some bottom feeder team? Why would they do that when they're not close to being a contender? Plus if you're giving up 4 1st rounders and your team sucks, those 4 picks could become 4 1st overall picks. No GM is going to risk that. You'll never work again in the NHL. Is there a team loaded with high end prospects that they don't need future high 1st round picks, and with tons of cap space? Nope.

Plus what GM in their right mind would use up 12% of their cap on Draisaitl? He hasn't won any cups, and had one good season playing with McDavid.

The calculation for compensation for an offer sheet is based on 5 years. So if an offer sheet of $50M over 7 years is given, the calculation for compensation is $50/5 years = $10M per year, which is 4 1st r picks as compensation.

Remember, the player has to sign the offer sheet too. There are reasons why the player may not want to sign the offer sheet. Draisaitl could get offered more money, but could turn it down.

And as for McDavid's contract that is still in negotiations, let's reserve our analysis for when it actually happens. Same with the "$9M offer sheet" to Draisaitl.

If the McD rumours are true, dump RNH's $6M contract, and McD's net impact on the salary cap in 2 years is $7.25M.

But in the end, there's still too many uncertainties, so it's not even worth the energy speculating. We might as well be discussing who the 1st and 2nd overall picks will be in the 2020 draft.
 
Agree that no team will give Draisaitl an offer sheet, the one team I heard mentioned on the PDOcast, that would make sense was San Jose. They have the space, don't have many, any intriguing youngsters coming up on RFA status themselves. The discussion revolved around offering $9.5M per which would lead them to surrendering two firsts, a second, and a third if the Oilers didn't match.

At that number it would be interesting to see if the Oilers actually matched it. It's likely moot, but still fun to discuss.

It's a shame there's so many former players in front office positions. If the league were more like the NBA the offer sheets would be a much more common occurrence.
 
I find it kind of odd the Oilers came right out and said they would match any offer. Isn't that sort of saying "hey division rivals come destroy our cap space"? Maybe the Oilers could have gotten Draisaitl for $7-8M, but someone like Calgary could come in and sheet him for $9.5M just to force the Oilers into spending an extra million or two. I get the tactic is to try and tell teams "don't waste your time, leave him alone" but maybe someone calls his bluff.

I know it's somewhat of an "unwritten rule" that GM's don't do it but don't forget the Oilers themselves pulled the same stunt in the past so karma could come back to bite them. It's certainly within the rules to be done if a team has the guts. Maybe Vegas decides to make a splash and sheets him for $10M just to get their hands on a star #1 center.

Probably won't happen but hey it would make the Free Agent Frenzy a lot more interesting!

Should also be noted that it's being reported that MCDAVID took less money than the Oilers offered him to allocated extra $750K elsewhere on the team. For all the haters saying Sid is an angel and Connor is robbing the Oilers.

Could be reverse psychology. They say that to make an offer sheet well above their reasonable expectations and reap the rewards of draft compensation...2 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd for an offer of 7.8-9.8...4 firsts for above 9.8.

Great deal for both sides.

And I think Sid was fair in what he took at the time and has now earned it and then some.

Even 1 Cup for the Oilers under this 8 year deal would bring them revenue streams that would make the deal worth it.

Another buyout-proof contract with something like $86M due to be paid in bonuses. Start bracing yourself for another lockout folks :D
