Nabokov to NY Islanders?

Just read an article out of New Jersey that the Devils might claim Nabokov and then put him on waivers again which would make him a Red Wing?? Not sure why the Devils would do that to help out the Wings? Unless Lou isn't thrilled with the current system.

Could the Devils sign him, then make a trade with Detroit? I cant see either team wasting any time even discussing Nabby coming back if they didn't think they'd land him. I got it....Nabby gets picked up by the Devils, and the Devils trade Brodeur to the Wings for one last cup run :)

There were rumors last night that they could do it, but that doesn't guarantee the Wings would get him. Plus, the Devils could get in trouble with the NHL again for trying to use a loophole. If the Devs claim him and put him on waivers, the teams that still wanted Nabby that have worse records than the Wings would still get a shot before Detroit. So it would be totally useless for the Devils to do that.

That's what I thought Chris and I could be wrong but the no movement clause added to the contract prevents another team from trading him or putting him on waivers and if they do he goes to the Wings first before any other team. Again I read that and not sure that's completely accurate but it's word on the street around here.

If the NHL approved a contract with wording like that, I'd be shocked. That would allow movements like this to happen in the future where last place teams give wink/nod deals to other teams so they can bypass the Waiver process.

The other thing I read that made a little sense was that the Wings knew he'd be picked up and that's why the contract is so small. The deal was more about opening the NHL door for Nabby. Then he'd sign with the Wings next year for helping him get back in.

I thought it was the whole idea of a no trade but I'm no expert on this stuff as it's pretty confusing if you ask me. We'll know for sure noon tomorrow. As far as the other deal that wouldn't surprise me either. Though I think Jimmy would have to implode in the playoffs for the Wings to give Nabokov a chance to start. They are all about win now though so who knows.

i wonder if the habs would have intrest.Gotta think he would play better than Auld down the stretch

I just can't see Nabakov in Montreal backing up Price. Nabakov wants starts, and he won't get as many in Montreal as he would on a team with a depleted net.

Caps, Rangers, and everyone that is ranked 5-13 in the Western Conference might be interested in claiming him....

Rangers are fine with Lundqvist and Biron. arguably a better tandem than any of the Boucher/Bobrovsky/Leighton combos Philly could've gone with. (yes, i know Leighton's gone now).

and this isn't a personal jab at the flyers or you. jsut saying philly's weakest point is usually their goalie. they got great depth on offense and defense. i'm sure there were ALOT of people surprised they made it to the Finals with the goalies they had.

The one situation that I've not seen anyone suggest is a team picking Nabokov up on waivers and then trading their starting goalie to free up cap space for next season. With the trade deadline approaching, there are several teams that need to free up space and Nabokov sure looks like an attractive option to finish out this season. I wouldn't think it would be outside the realm of possibilities (and I wouldn't put it past Holland to have already discussed the possibility with Nabokov's agent and high waiver priority GMs).

If a team does this, they avoid all the stipulations of Nabokov returning to the NHL; they get a 'proven' NHL 'tender; and they free up valuable cap space going into next season. I took a cursory look at the numbers... New Jersey could pick up Nabokov (for $570,000) and trade Brodeur to Detroit (who has just enough room to take his cap hit)... Probably not a real high probability of it happening, but stranger things probably have...

Maybe with Giguere - can't see it happening with Brodeur. With his salary - even the remainder of the season Cap Hit is substantial. Not to mention his play is certainly not up to par. Turco could be an option as well, but I would think that Chicago would want him around just in case.
