Nabokov to NY Islanders?

Can't blame the guy for not wanting to play on a team with zero chance of any playoff runs in the near future

Now he is suspended by the Islanders!

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=550602

best thing the Isles have done all year and it's off the ice. LOL! he brought this on himself. if he doesn't see himself able to help a team on the bottom, then what good is he? personally, i think detroit should be glad the Isles kept someone with his me first attitude off their bench. next, we'll have more kids like Lindros refusing to go to the teams that draft them because they can't see themselves helping a team on the bottom. what's the point?

Forget the Isles bashing, if they didn't pick Nabby up, probably about 6 other teams other than Detroit would have picked him up, so he'd be in the same situation. But I still don't understand why the Isles picked him up unless he's done something to piss them off in the past. Is is a fiasco, yes. But it's all within the rules.

I feel no sympathy for Nabokov. If he didn't think this was going to happen, then he needs to fire his agent because clearly the agent is not explaining to him what the implications are when he signs in the KHL, and then signs back in the NHL in the same season.

He had his chance to sign with a "cup contender" at the beginning of the season when he was a UFA. Several cup contending teams had cap issues. He didn't want to take a pay cut so he signed for more money in the KHL.

Turns out, the KHL isn't what he expected, got released and wants to come back to the NHL. But signing for 570k is not going to ensure that he'd clear waivers and end up with the Red Wings. Another dumb move on his part.

But it wasnt 6 other teams...it was the isles...... :|

.

I think that is why he is so confused about it as well. Then again the isles have a history of mismanaging goalies of late. So I guess they are just on par......

And no one is bashing the isles, we are bashing their front office.

I feel bad for the fans though

yeah the Isles owner and front office are messed up. going back to when Milbury was GM too.

Would Nabby have reported if SJ picked him up?

I think it's funny that if he doesn't report, he'll owe the Islanders a FULL season of play next year.

Lots of things could have made this happen - another western conference or central division team may have called the Islanders and asked for a favor to keep Nabby from Detroit. The Isles may have misunderstood their ability to move Nabby later on, thinking they were getting a tradeable asset for next to nothing. Or Garth Snow really doesn't like Nabakov. Who knows?

Regardless, everyone is playing with in the rules, so it just brings to light some of the messed up holes in the CBA.

Likely scenario, Nabokov shows up with about 15-20 games left, still has to get into game shape, and probably rounds into shape with about 2-3 games remaining in the season. No owing a year to the Isles, and he becomes a UFA on July 1st.

DiPietro's still meh and they just traded Roloson. why do people think the Isles wouldn't have any use for Nabokov?

The Isles weren't looking to win with Nabokov, they were looking to spare throwing their young goalies to the wolves, which I agree with. They sent Bailey to the Ahl this year for the same reason. The kids need to play and to gain confidence. Poulin looks like a decent prospect, keeping him up now only hurts him further down the road. This is one of the best moves I have seen Garth Snow make, although Garth hasn't blown chunks the way I thought he would. He is building a good young club. Tavares, Okposo, Bailey, El Nino, Nugent-Hopkins...

Snow did the right thing within the rules. Nabakov is being a self-centered brat. He should be worrying about playing in the NHL altogether if he still wants to earn a check. I'm glad they suspended him and the Islanders are playing .500 hockey right now. Their early start really sucked. There are 30 games left and a few teams in the 6-8 spots in the East are looking a bit shaky right now. Nabakov could have showcased his stuff for a bigger deal next year, instead he took his ball and went back home.

Don't like Nabby but can understand where he is coming from. Who knows if he would of reported to anybody else but the Isles aren't making the playoffs. He wants a cup and let's face it,he's no spring chicken. You can put this in the same light with every other NHLer want to go to a cup contender later in their career.

No matter why the Isles picked him up,they have the right to act within the rules so they can't be faulted for anything.

Its not the same. Nabokov had that chance last off season, but he wanted to be greedy. Now that his greed has left him in this spot, he has to deal with it. Its hard to feel bad for this guy. He did this to himself.

Im surprised no conspiracy theorists have come on theorizing that it could be another team (that wouldnt want Detroit to have Nabokov) that worked out a back room deal with the Isles so they would claim him and deprive Detroit. It wouldnt be the first time this has happened.
I wonder if Snow still has a close relationship with Philly management/ownership from his playing days.....

The thing is, based on the contract, this has little to do with money this year for Nabakov. And why single him out as being a spolied brat because he exercises his rights under the CBA?

I agree with Art though - he will come back and finish out the season, just to get the contract out of the way and be available for next year... though I'm still not convinced he's going to be an upgrade for anyone.

You missed my earlier post... :) Though I was just throwing it out there as a general scenario...

Sure it is. He's in the same headspace as many of those who have prolonged there careers with the hope of Lord Stanley. The past is the past and for Nabby why would you play for a losing club at this point. He's got something to proove and it will not happen for him in Long Island

I don't feel bad for the guy, just trying to understand him

I still have a hard time fathoming why the Isles picked him up, knowing in the back of their minds he wouldn't play for them asides from what said earlier about not wanting their young guys to get smoked.

- Unless they fully intend on trading him and this suspension is all part of the show to wind up with an asset.

There is nothing wrong with him turning down the isles. Are you saying you would accept???? thought not

He signed with detroit and wanted to play in detroit. Then the worst team in the league claims him for no reason. How about trying to void your 15 year goalie already under contract first......

The only problem with trying to trade him - is that Nabokov 1. must agree to be put on waivers and 2. then be placed on waivers again. IF he clears, then he can be traded, with his permission.

And if you have a team's management acting like this - good luck on attracting even the most desperate of free agents looking for work - Europe looks like a much better alternative than playing in Uniondale...
