Nabokov to NY Islanders?

I don't undersand the whole mid season free agent waiver thing. Obviously a player signs with a team for a reason so why should other teams have a chance to pick him up? It doesn't make sense to me.

James

He played in Europe first - the rule is in place to keep teams from parachuting guys in late in the year after the season is over in Europe. If he never signed with St. Petersburg, and remained a UFA, there is no issue at all.

Absurd. Holland does all the legwork on the contract and the Isles scoop in and snag him. Maybe that was the plan all along. Sort of a wink, wink, I'll sign you this summer but we have to do this to be able to do that later.

It is funny you are upset with this. The Islanders signed Wade Dubielewicz a few season ago to a contract during the season and he was claimed by the Jackets off waivers. I doubt that you were upset about that when they needed a backup for their playoff run.

I think its absurd and a classless act on the behalf of the Islanders to do this. I'm sure all the GM's have understandings and talk to each other about what they are going to do to be sure there are no roadblocks such as this. The Islanders season is over......let it go and take another high draft pick AFTER firing your GM and getting somebody who knows what they are doing and has a respect for his other GM's into office. It is a gong show on Rhode Island and it's not going to change until Snow is gone. It's the same in Ottawa. Murray has to go there too. He has TOTALLY destroyed what John Muckler built in Ottawa and continues to be allowed to run them into the ground.

Would you like some chesse with your wine. Lol, classless act, wow, going by the rules is classless. Snow has done a nice job with the hand he has been delt. He and his staff have done a nice job in the draft and have signed some nice players who played mostly in the AHL. If the highend free agents will not sign here, how is this his fault. And for the record Long Island is not Rhode Island, learn some geography.

I cant fault the guy for not wanting to play for the islanders.

could of not said it any better, islanders are the joke of the nhl ,owner has more money to waste than anybody, look at what he started with these 15 year deals, can't blame nabby for not wanting to play with clowns, glad he made a stand, shows he has ALOT OF CLASS and not just grabbing the money.good for him:goal:

KHL or NY Islanders....I wouldn't go to neither of places either :)

Islanders did absolutlely nothing wrong here. Did anyone really think he would slip through waivers and make it all the way to Detroit...especially at that price. Not likely. I'm not sure why the Islanders would want him though, as all Nabby will do is win games and get the Islanders a lower draft pick. THAT IS...if they don't trade him to Toronto for their first round pick :)

The Islanders are just going to trade him to Detroit for a draft pick or keep him until the trade deadline and pick up a draft pick from a playoff team.

Good move by the Islanders , they just bought an extra draft pick.

Dan

Can't he agree to waive the No Movement Clause if they traded him to a team he is willing to play for ? Does he have to clear waivers again because he played in a KHL this year ?

Dan

The Islanders can't trade him. Not only does he have a No Movement Clause, in order to trade him, he has to clear waivers again.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea the rules were so different for players starting the season in Europe .

Dan

From Bob McKenzie's breakdown - http://tsn.ca/columnists/bob_mckenzie/?id=350469

-- If the team that claims and is awarded Nabokov (Islanders) decides to subsequently trade or assign the player, they must:

a) put Nabokov back on waivers again, where any team, including the Detroit Red Wings, could then claim him. Again, priority claim belongs to the team lowest in the standings.
Only if Nabokov clears waivers would the team holding his rights be able to trade him.

b) get Nabokov's permission to put him on waivers and/or trade him as Nabokov, once he is a member in good standing of the NHL, has a No Movement Clause in his contract.

Interview with Nabakov. Wow he has a crappy attitude. You got rejected by the NHL, teams want you and instead of showcasing your talent for another contract, you want to be a brat about it. No NHL team is going to touch you now:

"I think I'm going to stay home for now, I'm sticking with my decision," Nabokov told ESPN.com from his home in San Jose. "It's nothing against the Islanders and their organization. It's nothing to do with that. It's just that I'm at the point in my career where I want to help a team win in the playoffs. I don't see how I could help the Islanders or what I could do for them. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me. And I hope they understand that."

"Right now, that's right," Nabokov said. "I was surprised they picked me up. I was like, 'Wow, what's the point?' ''

Wow, joke of the league, Its okay we KESSEL will be worth another first round draft pick with rask, seguin! HAHAHAH Isles maybe a hurting team but at least there is light at the end of the tunnel. Not like another a train coming down toronto's tracks with them giving up another first round pick for Kessel! Nice going BURKE your ego has finally caught up to you and it shows with the team you put on the ice in T.O!

I really don't get why everyone gets their knickers in a knot when someone does something within the rules. The Islanders were within heir rights to claim Nabakov, and he is within his rights to decline and say he wants to stay home. It's interesting to watch, but everyone is playing by the rules, so I don't see the need for animosity.

And Chris, we both know that no matter what goalie plays for the Flyers, he'll inexcusably become worse than he really is... must be some sort of anti-goalie drug in the Philly water.

And as far as playing for the Islanders is concerned, can't fault a guy for not wanting to go to a place where it's a gong show.

Gotta disagree with you Art. If you want to seek employment somewhere, you've got to go in expecting to play by their rules.

Nabby is by no means a generational talent and might have actually been sent packing by the trade deadline if he had a **** attitude when he hit Long Island. I guess good of him at least for saving the Islanders the trouble. I hope the Isles do suspend him and sit him for the rest of the year for this.

Can't blame the guy for not wanting to play on a team with zero chance of any playoff runs in the near future

Yeah, you totally can, and I don't fault the Islanders one bit for suspending him.

Nabokov is a guy looking in from the outside, and you don't make the rules up as you go along as to how you're going to get in. If you could do whatever you wanted to get around the rules, Svatos and Wellwood would both be playing in St. Louis right now by hook or crook.

I'm not an Islanders fan...and in fact there are few franchises I wish worse upon. However, he knew he ran the risk of something like this happening, and now isn't willing to face the music now that it has? I hope he sits at home reading GQ watching reruns of Matlock for the rest of the season.

"I was surprised they picked me up. I was like, 'Wow, what's the point?'"

touche my friend......

EDIT: and the isles suspend a guy who wasnt playing for them anyway.....another "whats the point" moment courtesy of Sir Wang-A-Lot
