NHL Debuts 2011-12

Mathieu Corbeil to backup in C'bus tonight

This is a very interesting case -- much more complex than it appears on the surface!

Mathieu Corbeil was a Blue Jackets draft pick in 2010, and after training camp this year, he was assigned to Saint John of the QMJHL to continue his junior career. What's important about Corbeil is that he does not have a contract with the Blue Jackets.

In a couple of old threads (here and here), we pieced out a few things regarding what makes a player eligible to appear on a RC. To summarize:

* If you have an NHL contract and just sit on the bench for a game, you're eligible for cards. Examples include Rob McVicar, Andrew Penner, Kevin Nastiuk.
* If you don't have an NHL contract, you're still eligible for cards as long as you actually play minutes in the game. Examples include David Sloane, Alexander Pechurskiy, Geoff Kinrade.
* If you don't have an NHL contract, and you just sit on the bench, you can't appear on RCs. Examples include Tom Fenton, Chris Levesque, Brett Leonhardt, Torrie Jung.

Corbeil seems closest to the third category, but he doesn't fit in neatly. His situation is more unique than it first seems.

It's not in the NHL's collective bargaining agreement with the NHL players' association. It's in the NHL-CHL agreement. The Canadian Hockey League is the governing body of the three Canadian junior leagues. A rule allows a club to recall under emergency a player from a junior club for 24 hours, and only 24 hours, to get through a disastrous situation, like this.

Unlike Fenton, Corbeil didn't sign an amateur tryout contract -- but he is legal property of the team he appeared for. Unlike Pechurskiy, he didn't play any minutes.

At the moment, I'd lean toward Corbeil being ineligible.

Another Russian who's name is always changing in english but very excited voynov played and hopefully he can get some cards this year (yg please! Haha)

I heard on the Coach Arniel show last night that Allen York (G) is going to be called up to back up Mason Friday.

Yup, and unlike Corbeil, he's got an NHL contract so he'll be RC eligible even if he only rides the pine.

Meanwhile -- Bracken Kearns will make his NHL debut for the Panthers tonight.

He's a 30-year-old rookie who finally made his way to the show.

Andy, McVicar did play 3 minutes - so he'd classify anyways. Can't recall if he benchwarmed substantially prior to his debut that his RCs would've been made before he played.
