Official 2007 NHL Free Agency thread

what the word on forsberg anything yet i hope he goes back to the Avs to bad Dallas wouldnt get him but they got Modano

Shanny is a UFA

And on the Sarich deal...yeah, I don't get that. Why not try and get the Roman Hammer back for that money? Neither her nor Stuart have popped up on the radar just yet. But as always, in Sutter we trust!

Drury signed with the blue shirts too, according to TSN

That's crazy, the rangers just got a heck of a lot better.

I said if Drury stayed in the east it would only be Buff or the Rags.

There you have it!;)

I am bummed the Kings didn't get him, but can't wait to hear Mike and Jay sing his praises to the high heavens after cursing him last year, LOL.:D

I'm very pleased with the Rangers two big signings so far! They were quite thin down the middle last year and Gomez/Drury will provide quality depth. Drury also brings a ton of playoff experience. I'm sure Gomez will also be motivated to stick it to New Jersey eight games per year.

I think both Anaheim and Detroit did well with their defensive signings. Schneider covers Anaheim in case Niedermayer retires. Rafalski backfills Schneider's point spot on the PP.

Toronto also got a great deal with Jason Blake for 4 years at a reasonable rate.

Of course, the biggest signing of the day belongs to the Capitals. They are going to be a force with Tom Poti manning the point for the next 4 years!

Avs shore up their defense corps by signing Hannan.....solid pick up there...the Sharks have gotten noticably weaker this offseason, for sure...

I told the guys this earlier in chat, Av's were gonna go balls out for Hannan and Michael Handzus. At least that's what Tony Granato told me the other day leaving a pickup game!;)

Drury also brings a ton of playoff experience.

Forget the experience, the guy OWNS the playoffs. He doesn't just get there he produces HUGE.

Gomez also has considerable playoff time under his belt.

Rags might have actaully done a couple good signings for once.

Isles look like contenders.

add: Jon Sim (for three years!!!)

subtract: Ryan Smyth (most likely), Jason Blake, Kozlov, Yashin

Hope they don't go and signsix 3rd and 4th liners and at least give the kids (Tambelinni, Nokelainen, Bergenheim, etc) a shot.

Here's from a source:

What a great day for Bob Gainey. As a habs fan could this day been even better? What a complete waste.I think he should be fired.

I was away for most of the day and caught these updates thanks to TSN's test alerts. Sweet merciful crap there were some huge signings. As was mentioned in the "cap going to 50.3 mil" thread, these teams better hope the cap doesn't drop anytime soon. A LOT of 5+ year deals. I'm speechless. Any fan of the Rangers has to be **** happy!

Nope. As much as I wanted to see at least one or two of the guys signed today in a Habs uni, I'm glad Gainey didn't spend ridiculous money for any of em. I expected SOuray's name to pop up on the text alerts...quite surprised it didn't. Still, remember that the Bulldogs just won the Calder Cup; we have some young talent so all's not lost. Even so: Wow. Just...wow.

I was actually hoping Hannan would be gone. His defensive mistakes stick in my mind more than anything for some reason. It got to the point where I was nervous every time he had the puck in our end. Same reason I was happy to see Rathje leave way back when.

Happy we're keeping Rivet.

Kariya signs with the Blues.
Pittsburgh adds Sydor and Sykora.
Nylander reportedly signed by the Oilers.
All according to TSN.

Wow, when I saw the totals today, I was stunned. The $$ is no big surprise (although several were overpaid, but that's what UFA is all about :) ), what absolutely floors me is the LENGTH of these contracts. Most of these guys will be well past prime parts of their careers and still have a year, two, maybe even three left on the contracts they signed. Holy smokes. Rangers and Flyers look good for the next few years...after that, these contracts might be an albatross that drags them down. But what do I know; I'm sure that Sather and Holmgren know exactly what they are doing... ;)

And Lombardi still sits with $26 mil in cap space. Do you think the Kings will be lowering ticket prices by 50% since they are only committing 50% of the cap? Naah, they'll sign Roenick to a $4.9 mil deal and he'll score 9 goals.
