Sens get Phaneuf, Frattin, Bailey, Rupert and Donaghey in exchange for Cowen, Greening, Michalek, Lindberg and 2nd-rounder in 2017.

Crazy!

It looks like a video game trade. I guess the leafs get roster players? I don't know much about the prospects going both ways but I don't think there is a winner here

Toronto wins because it likely helps them cement last place, and they get out of the Phaneuf contract. That's my first blush feel anyway... would have to look at the players a little closer to see if it means any more than that!

anyone like to theorize the numbers game here. Number9ne or whomever?

Sens
Phaneuf - Signed thru 2021
Frattin - Expiring Contract UFA
Bailey - RFA this summer
Rupert - 21 Yr Old (6th Rounder in 2012)
Donaghey - 19 Yr Old Undrafted Rookie from the Q, 3 Year Contract

Leafs
Cowen - 1 More Yr @ 3.1m
Greening - 1 More Yr @ 2.6m
Michalek - 1 More Yr @ 4.0m
Lindberg - 20 Yr Old (4th Rounder in 2013)
2nd-rounder in 2017

Whatever will the idiots of Leafs Nation have to beech about now? I'm not at all a Phaneuf fan, and yes he makes too much money, and yes he makes mistakes all the time, but he's still a very decent, and useful player, and now you are all gonna see just how much he'll be missed. You think the defense is bad now, just wait, and see how brutal it is going to be the rest of the year. I feel bad for the goalies, that's if they are even on the team in two weeks, or so? I knew it was coming, and it's likely not gonna be done there, but it is still painful to watch now, until we see the final outcome down the road. Good news is it frees up space for a superstar free agent, captain type player that grew up not too far from the Toronto area. Anyone know of such a player?

The Leafs are doing exactly what they said they would, moving out big contracts. Short term pain for long term gain. I loved Phaneuf's effort but everyone knew he was over paid. This free up a lot of cap space (ahmm Stamkos lol). Hopefully Colin Greening gets some playing time, got to love having a Newfoundland guy on the team.

Toronto has now had 3 of the top ten 2003 draft picks come through... Horton, Phaneuf and now Michalek. Not exactly a stellar combo... :)

As a Leaf fan, I like it, as I stated above - move out a bad contract (though yes, Phaneuf will be missed on the back end, but that's one of the short term pains for long term gains that are necessary when rebuilding) and tank it to the bottom. I don't know about freeing up cap space - UFA signings of big players don't happen much in the NHL these days, and adding Stamkos next year may not fit with the 'rebuilding' plan... but we'll see...

Keep moving them out. Free up space and hopefully have some smarter signings in the future. It don't hurt getting rid of key guys with a strong draft class coming....hope they finish last by 20 points lol. As I said before I liked Phaneuf but I would have loved him at around 3.5 per season and as a 3-4 Dman. I would love to hear the first conversation between Phaneuf and Neil.

Huge trade for the Leafs. They unload a big long term contract, and free up valuable cap space. I like what the Leafs have been doing, unloading bad contracts, yet still getting something fair in return or something that helps them. Shanny has been a shrewd opportunist for the most part.
