The Official Trade Deadline Thread.....

The Leafs did some good but I think getting rid of Kilger is a mistake he is a big hitter and can scare other teams

You just said you wanted to get rid of players, they did, and got decent draft picks while saving 3M+ and you now say getting rid of a certain player is a mistake.

Jeez, make up your mind.

The team is rebuilding. Essentially, everyone over the age of 25 is available for picks/prospects. Thats how it works.

Does anyone else think that the Leafs had a rather good trade deadline day? They've cut out almost 4 million bucks in salary, and will probably shave another 2m off by cutting Razor in the off season? With all those vets ... rebuilding starts here.

They will lose Raycroft (2M) and Bell (2.167M) this summer. Plus Kubina's not trade clause is lifted and Fletcher will deal him. He said he had a deal in place today but Kubina wouldn't waive the NTC. From draft day until Aug 15 Kubinas no trade clause is lifted so he will get dealt then. Thats another 5M saved.

I'm in the belief that too many times Vancouver has been poised, even in the pre-cap era to make a decent run at the cup, but they have refused to make use of the trade deadline. It's true that they'll have more cap space next year - why not take a rental this year and make a real run for something whilst they still have the talent that they do? The summer is not exactly ridden with talent either. Let's not forget that what the Canucks need right now, is depth on the front lines - another top 6 forward. Considering that this summer we will be arguably losing two (Naslund - he probably won't re-sign for less than 4.5-5M and Morrison - he probably won't re-sign for the levels that the Canucks want him to either), why did we not take a chance and take someone like Ryder who's contract runs out in the summer? There are of course, complications in working out a deal and the like, but it irks me to see that the Canucks seemingly made no real effort to actively recruit, yet again. I can't think of a significant trade deadline deal that improved their chances in the current year for a long time running, with the exception of the 2000 trade that brought over Morrison. Whether or not Morrison was envisaged to produce the kind of chemistry that he did over the next two years with Naslund and Bertuzzi is questionable too.

I will with-hold comments as to not offend the highly sensitive Cooke fans. :dizzy:
Impressive, that must have been really really really hard to do.

As both a Canucks fan adn obvious Cooke fan, It's a roughed up feeling inside to see him part ways with the organization. I have to say that this year his offensive numbers have not been all too acceptable. It's not secret that coach V and Cookie were not on the same wavelength. Hopefully the move to the East may give him a bit of a spark as it may be what the doctor ordered. Time will tell if he fit's in well there.

Feb 26 2008 will go down as the day Hockey Fans learned the name Ted Ruth.

Unfortunately, the 4 words proceeding his name are "Who the ---- is"

Much appreciated :)

OK I couldn't bite my tongue anymore. All I will say is, Vancouver must like Burrows more then Cooke. Younger, cheaper, more upside? However, if you want to make serious playoff runs, you need a guy like Cooke. The refs are much more leniant in the playoffs, and as much as I hate to say it Cooke ALWAYS gave everything he had in the playoffs. Not that he didn't in the regular season, but he seemed to really pick it up in the playoffs and on some nights was the best Canuck on the ice. I bet Minnesota fans are very happy they don't have to deal with him anymore.

There, I was nice to Cooke, maybe I am just happy he is out East now. I know what it's like to lose a fan or personal favorite, so I can sympathize with Canuck fans.

You know you are right. All the talk on the radio and local sports tv shows since yesterday is about how Burrows is comming into a good role on the team. He agitates and scores (and fights haha) and seems to be what the media and such believe will be good enough (or better) to fit Cookes role.

However, Cooke added something that Burrows does not. Those big hits! I was just watching Ryan Walter comment on sportsnet and he said that he feels the canucks will miss Cooke in that the opposition has really no one on the Nucks roster to fear in terms of bone crunching boddy checks. That really was Cookes big specialty. Like you said especially come playoff time in a long gruling serries, Cooke can put out some major punnishment and make a guy beg for the epsom salts at the end of the game ;)

It's cool of you to "be nice to Cooke" and to acknowlege the crappiness that it is for fans to loose a home team fav. It's tough alright. You get props :)

P.S. I have had some questions on my collecting status on Cooke now. I'll still collect his stuff with the same passion as ever. He is still my favorite.

cooker - I have a feeling a certain GM will be extending an invitation this offseason to a certain undrafted Vancouver Giant who may be an even harder hitter then Cooke. He doesn't have the offensive skills of Cooke, but he can probably make the team as a fourth line banger that will quickly climb the charts of the NHL's most hated. :dizzy:

I get the feeling, Jules, that Nonis was banking on either Sundin removing his NT clause or striking a deal with Foppa. As well, word was that teams were asking for too much in return for trades, i.e. Kesler, Raymond, etc., and as much as I'm not pleased with the Canucks lack of deals, I'm glad we kept the young guys around.

Hmmmm, interesting but I have no idea who that may be. By the way, it's good to have a decent conversation. Hopefully we can put that bogus from a couple weeks ago behind us. YGPM as well.
