trade deadline just got more interestin, Rick Nash available

if Vancouver can find someone to take Ballard they have a real shot at Nash. they can offer Schneider and Raymond and add from there. but creating cap space could be difficult.

Philly could make a move with a package of JVR + Bobrovski and another young player.

i don't think the Rangers have enough young talent to offer.

Toronto could offer Schenn and Colborne or Kadri.

SJ could offer Greiss, Demers and a young forward

Boston has lots of young talent like Hamilton and Hamil but i have to think Columbus would want at least one proven talent.

Chicago and Detroit would probably both love to get Nash but i don't think either team has the quality young players Columbus is probably looking for.

what about the Blues? they have lots of cap space, lots of young talent and they could move one of their goalies if that is important to Columbus.

there are lots of options. if Howson plays his cards right he could move Nash, Carter and Huselius and bring in 6-8 quality young players to start over with.

1) Eastern Team - Detroit will be in the east some day.
2) Team with young, affordable, NHL roster/caliber players - tons of inexpensive talent
3) Cap space - have it
4) Playoff contender - stanley cup contender (waves no-trade for that)
5) Must give a very good goalie or Dman who's young in return - excellent goalies in minors
6) 1st round pick must be included - who cares, it will be 29 or 30th pick

i'm not sure Detroit has the higher end affordable talent. it all depends on what Howson is looking for and how difficult Nash is going to be with his demands.

assuming Howson trades Carter as well, maybe he gets the goalie he wants in that deal and he won't need a goalie in return in the Nash trade.

While they fill most of those there are 2 glaring ones they miss.

#1) Columbus isn't trading Rick Nash within the division. Franchise players usually don't get traded within the division. CBJ won't do that to their fans either.

#2) What "tons of inexpensive talent?" Detroit is the oldest team in the league and all of their key payers are veterans. Their inexpensive talent (Abdelkader? Helm? won't come anywhere close to netting Rick Nash... not in the least). They have a few good prospects (Nyqvist and Tartar namely) but any team in the leage *could* match those prospects.


Detroit simply doesn't have the talent to exchange... and being within the division makes it ever harder.



Edit: Something that may work out in Detroits favour, however, is that Rick Nash has a NMC... he more or less dictates where he goes. And as per Nik Kypreos, Rick Nash has given Howson a very short list of teams.

So conceivably, Nash may have given 2-3-4 teams he would want to go to. Nash himself may ask for Detroit (along with a couple others)... so really, Detroit has the advantage of being a stellar team and Howson's hands being "tied" havign to deal with only a few teams.

Ottawa could get in on this with all the young talent they have but I don't think Murray would be willing to mess with the "retool" right now. As much as I'd love to see Nash on Spezza's wing.......
 
not that i trust Eklund, but he's saying Nash to LA is done for Bernier, Penner, Hunter and a pick. if DL pulls that off he deserves GM of the year :)
 
Eklund is already tweeting that a deal to L.A is done. Bernier, Penner, Hunter and a pick. That would be highway robbery if you ask me
 
IF THIS IS TRUE,

The Kings are/were up against the cap relatively tight, so Penner 4.25 [expiring UFA], Hunter 0.6 [expiring UFA] and Bernier 1.25 versus Nash's 7.8 does currently fit, but it leaves little room for the Kings to call up a backup goalie (.4 to .6) and deal with any injuries that don't involve LTIR down the road - remember Calgary's stretch drive post-Jokinen.

Also, depending on the cap going forward, this doesn't make the future $$$ easier for the Kings. With Richards/Kopitar/Doughty/Johnson all locked up long term and I'd have to assume Quick in 16 months will want to be as well, it's going to be rather top heavy in LA unless they make another big move.

If this happens they should load up the trucks and move that team out of Columbus immediately - trading your franchise players for garbage is a good way to keep your club completely irrelevant.

Actually I'll disagree. Brendan Smith is probably the Wings top prospect at the moment and is ready to play now along with Nyquist but the Wings have no room for them on the roster and they still have options to play in the minors so they leave them there. Tatar is ok but guys like Pulkkinen/Marzak/Jurco/Almqvist/Andersson the Wings have quite a few guys they could offer up for Nash. All this is irrelevant anyway as it'll be up to Nash where he goes. LA may make a nice offer but if Nash doesn't want to play there it won't happen. I don't see the Wings making this kind of move but I do think they have the guns to do it. I'd take the Wings prospects over what the supposed offer from LA is!

i wouldn't call Bernier garbage, but it does seem like they wouldn't be getting anywhere near enough. now if that was the deal for Carter that would be more what i would expect for him.

True enough but none of these players put them any closer to contention. Bernier is fine but he's a borderline starter in this league and no one that I would want to build a franchise around.

We shall see - it is Eklund pumping this rumor and even he doesn't seem to believe that it is true.

i think it's clear that Bernier will be a quality starter in the NHL. but i think it's also clear that if Howson does this deal it would be a surprise.

if it was Voynov or even Martinez instead of Hunter, then maybe.

Bernier/Voynov/Penner/1st is a good return. at least as good as any other team has offered as far as i've heard.

As I said last week, the Rags have been looking into Nash for a while now. This was in the NYP today:

The Post had been told the opening asking price...is in excess of the package speculated to be Brandon Dubinsky, Boston College can’t-miss prospect Chris Kreider, and a first-round draft choice.

Scott Howson, who scouted the Rangers-Flyers game in Philadelphia on Saturday and presumably will be at Madison Square Garden this Sunday when the Blue Jackets face the Rangers, (may be) demanding that Derek Stepan and/or Ryan McDonagh be included with Kreider in the package going the other way for Nash.

The Rags have built quite the team for themselves, and I would be willing to let go of any of these players except for McDonagh (who I feel might be the centerpiece of any Rags package). If the Rags could somehow pull this off without letting go of one of their top 4 Dmen, then I would be ecstatic.

Otherwise, I am happy with how far we have gone with what we have. We don't "need" Nash, he is a luxury, but would make for quite the addition...
