When do you stop collecting a player?

Morning,

I have pondered this question for a bit now. I do collect a few sets, but thats simple.. when you finish the set your done. I pick up Vintage Rcs.. but they have a pretty good balance if I want to trade/sell them in the future.

However I also collect Jason Labarbera... If it was Orr or some great legend, or some new and exciting Rookie.. you have potential to still see some changes in the value of your collection.

But I have just seen it go down...lol. No I dont collect for the $, I do it for fun and I have my sentimental value of it. But there still comes a time when you wonder why you continue putting $ into that player.

Also since he is not as main stream of a player I see less and less cards of his. Also adds to the negative in my opinion.

There are lots of great players I would like to collect that are not monster offensive players, but still a vital part of a team. But the ones I am interested in are recently retired. So its not like I even get to see them still play.

Seems like it takes the fire out of the collection when they are not active anymore.

So.. have you stopped collecting a player? Why? Traded teams? Poor sportsmanship? Injury? Retired?
What made you say.. "enough is enough, its time to move on"

I never felt a need to focus on one player. I prefer to collect a few nice cards of each player I like. My challenge is set building, and it doesn't need to be a master set. Building the base set w/ rookies and SP's is challenging enough.

There was another thread that raised the question to player collectors. Basically, it was whether you still collect a player after he changes teams. The response was mixed. I have noticed, however, that there are posts on all trade sites announcing that a collector is moving a player collection once he changes uniforms. But then there are others(Hossa collectors come to mind) that remain loyal despite a change.

although you're questioning if putting the money into the player is worth it, it doesn't sound like money is the actual problem. in that case, it can only be the fun. if it's fun anymore, then stop or just put the collecting on hold until you come across something new that you do like.

nothing wrong with changing tastes. when i first started collecing Lundqvist, i wanted every card. then i just wanted every rookie year card. now it's just autos, 1/1's, and select cards that catch my eye. on top of all that, i now also have a mini HOFer auto PC on the side too. everyone's tastes will change.
 
Probably once I stop collecting all together. I try to pick up Hejduk stuff once in a great long while and my other project also. I have learned I do not have to have every card of Hejduk, so I go after what comes cheap and what I like.

With Chris here. I stopped my player's collection when he got traded to Calgary, and even though he's now with a team I don't go out of my way to hate or like, it's just not the same.
 
I am more of a team collector than a Player collector... so mainly look for card that show them with the CBJ... even if they are on the CBJ but cards are from a differnt team, i don't go after them...

Well, I am sure they will have plenty of Philly Jersey pieces left, will you collect the ones that picture him as a King but have Philly Jersey pieces?
 
...when you realize the # of cards produced of said player is like the neverending story.

even when i tried to focus on certain lecavalier cards, it just became ridiculous the number of cards they were producing of him.
 
I gotta agree with everyone that said "when it stops being fun for you anymore".

Even if you simply take a break from the hobby as I did, you can recharge your juices and come back and enjoy it again. It's amazing the things that make us enjoy this hobby!
 
A number of things can cause a person to stop collecting a player

a) Player gets involved in some disturbing controversy
b) Player's playing ability drops off a cliff (sometimes)
c) Player's playing ability skyrockets, making him far too expensive to collect
d) The card companies flood him in the market, overwhelming and disappointing you
e) Retirement (sometimes)
f) Player gets traded (sometimes)

I try to stay faithful to bourque collecting but I know it's impossible to try and get even half of Ray's stuff out there now.
 
For me it's as soon as the fun gets sucked out... but that's when I change my goals rather than stop collecting a player.

I had been going after one of every card for Clark, Fleury & Odelein and picking up Probert stuff along the way but I found I couldn't keep up with all the high end clark pieces being produced and I was getting disappointed with falling behind in my % (100% was always the goal). So I decided to move most of my clarks & just keep the ones I really liked and cards that were gifts from various members etc. I recently sold a rare fleury that I thought I had 2 of, turns out I didn't & it didn't bother me at all. In fact I'll probably move a few others to raise some bucks for a Martin I've been drooling over for a few months. Pretty sure I'll enjoy that more than 5 colour variations on the same card.

I've evolved to collecting cards that appeal to me rather than trying to get 100% and wasting a lot of $ on cards that really didn't matter. I'm still after all Odelein cards but he doesn't have that much out anyway and I can't remember the last time my collecting habits made me this happy :)
