To be honest I feel the same way about ITG Ultimate slabs. If the card is out of the slab then I wouldn't only pay 20% of the guide. I feel that the slab is part of the card since that is how it was originally designed.

However if I was buying an expensive superlative card for my own PC I would probably display it in a nicer case. I would realize that it would drastically affect the resale value.

I belive that most PC guys have removed there superlative cards from there toploaders. When they wish to sell the card they simply place it back in the toploader and reseal the sticker and sell it as such.

I have seen at least one instance where a seller had a superlative card in a one touch and six months later the card in same sellers showcase back in a toploader with seal.


I think the majority of us are kidding ourselves if we think this is not going on.


What if the Gabby was taken out, put back in & sold on ebay? You would never know. I bet some of us crazy PC guys probably have superlative cards in our collection that have already been free'd at one point in time.

I do see both sides of the coin, all of my Lou's are still in toploaders, and will be that way forever, why? Cause i know at some point i will sell them and dont want to lose all my investment. Would i rather see them in one touch's, one word answer, YUP

If Dr. Price is reading this thread, PLEASE consider ditching the top-loaders for Superlative, Doc...

I think its quite clear that ITG cards dont get tampered with... if that is case/issue, then why dont all ITG products come with some sort of seal? ... BTP, H&P, 1972... i just dont get it

If the cards were left alone, (not placed in top loaders and sealed), then it would be up to the collector to determine how to store their cards... this would void all the "sealed, or not sealed" talk.
I believe a card by itself will garner more attention from collectors... if im paying BIG money for a card, i want the card to be to my exact liking. I believe the top loaders, and whether or not the seal is broken or what not, drives a lot of collectors away from the product...

Furthermore, those stickers are not made of aluminum... they brake on their own. Ive bought Superlative cards from very reliable sellers/members here, and the cards still showed up with broken seals.

My signature shows how i feel about this topic, but understand completely when other collectors dont wanna touch "non-top loadered" cards.

I personally HATE the sealed-top loader cards... i enjoy my cards the way i want, but to many people, that means the cards have lost their value... it doesnt bother me too much because theyre not going to be moved, but still...

All over a silly, little, flimsy sticker...

Im a huge ITG supporter, and have hundreds of beautiful BAP/ITG pieces in the collection... PLEASE Dr. Price, do something about those top loaders...
 
It doesn't matter to me what sort of holder the card comes in (BGS/ITG slab, stickered over top-loader, topps "uncirculated" holder, etc. I enjoy the card for... well, the card! If that means busting it out of those containers, then I will. I prefer the one-touches as they are nicer looking, don't scratch up as much and easy to display and store. As for value - once it hits my collection, it has no value per se. They are all the same to me - part of my collection that I enjoy.

To each their own. Collect what you enjoy and enjoy what you collect.
 
As Quicy noted from his discussion with Dr. Price himself, ITG views the toploaders as PACKING MATERIAL. They never expected people to keep them in there or consider it as part of the completeness of the card.

The toploaders are the cheapest way to provide a consistent packing material for all the cards, and affords an extra opportunity for each card to be reviewed before it is packed in the book. The only mistake ITG may have made was going with a unique sticker instead of plain old tape.

I totally get what the other side of the card is saying, but I personally don't think that way.

GET A GRIP FOLKS!!!!! Your card is ruined because someone took it out of a top loader with a insignificant sticker on the top? I am sure if you really wanted to, you would be able to carefully peel off a sticker from a common card and reseal this one - but I don't know why you would want to THE STICKER IS MEANINGLESS!!

I get that people like to have their cards as "from pack" condition.... and all of my trilogy FIT's, certified’s and Finest cards still have their plastic or toilet paper covers..... but this is ridiculous. Does ths ticker help preserve the card? NO! Does ths sticker hold any sort of intrinsic value? NO! Have I seen some cards from last year's SUP set that have cracked stickers (opened along the preforations) even out of the pack? YES Correct me if I am wrong (Brian Price) but the stickers are there so the cards don't fall out the end. Or perhaps it is some sort of legal thing (see the SUP TORONTO disclaimer on the inside cover of the box).

STICKERS ARE NOT THE POINT OF THESE CARDS! What are you going to do 5 years from now when the top loaders are all scratchy?

If it were in a ITG/Beckett slab that is different. People who open those should be looked at with squinty eyes.... in the same way you look at an Alex Daigle collection... but stickers?

What if ITG hadn't put the stickers on but had placed black (or even better, PINK) electrical tape on the top of the top loader.... would people still have the tape on the top then?


Ridiculous... just like asking $1999 for this gabby card. $200 maybe. MAYBE.

I have an almost-complete set of 03/04 UM4 Autos & Auto/Jerseys. Everyone of them is still in their sealed state. Everyone of them will STAY in their sealed state. I have had a couple with popped seals or out of the sealed toploader, and I have replaced them.

The sealed toploaders, to me, adds a bit more class to an already classy product. Stay the course, Brian... keep the toploaders!

Bruce, while i understand where youre coming from, and cannot argue with peoples own opinions, wouldnt the following be a nice compromise....

Anyone that wants to store their cards in top loaders and like the way they look, theyre likin it...

for anyone that doesnt store their cards in top loaders and doesnt like the look of them, well, theyre outa luck...

But, if the cards came out of the pack as is, (just like BTP, H&P, etc), then every collector can keep and look at their cards the way they choose to. And even though the seal can be broken and card taken out of the loader, weve seen time and time again that most folks think it lessens, or even totally devalues the card. I dont agree with this, but...

The people who like the top loaders can still store them in top loaders... people who dont, can pick their own way of storing

The only thing left would be the actual sticker thats sealing the loader... if the sticker is to your liking, then i cannot say anything about that...

But i will say that that little sticker has caused a lot of drama for a lot of collectors...
 
I think it has more to do with the card being "uncirculated" than anything else. I like that thought, that in theory, no one has had their grubby hands the card except the player if it was signed and an ITG employee, who most likely handled the card with more care than I would. For me, that is where the appeal comes from.

Just FYI: Sakic sold for $800 and the Brett Hull at auction recently for just over $500. Given that Gabby has a dedicated core of very jealous and competitive collectors, $1K isn't an outlandish sum of money for this card.

I feel the same way. Speaking from my own personal preference, if its not sealed I won't even look at it. I want something that comes in "original" form.

Just FYI: Sakic sold for $800 and the Brett Hull at auction recently for just over $500. Given that Gabby has a dedicated core of very jealous and competitive collectors, $1K isn't an outlandish sum of money for this card.

Expanding on this. I sold the Volume I Jari Kurri Stick Rack 1/1 for an outright, sick amount of cash. If your a person that likes guessing games, it was more than 799.99 USD and less than 801.00 USD ;) I'll leave the math for someone to figure out.

I have, and will continue to remove cards from the sealed Superlative top-loaders if they are staying in my collection. The way I see it, the seal maintains the integrity of the card until it is in the hands of a collector, at that point the collector can do what he wishes knowing the card passed hands sealed and in it's original state. Maybe the seller jumped the gun on this one or maybe the seal broke unintentionally. Maybe send him an email asking why he cracked it?

Cracking an Ultimate slab however, is something I have not yet brought myself to do. With the Ultimate cards it's almost like the card comes in two parts, the card itself and the little "plaque" that has the serial number information on it. Superlative cards have the print run/serial number printed right on them, with Ultimate cards it's hard to separate the card from it's identity.

I agree with this. To me its not just packaging its part of the presentation.



To those that mentioned adequate protection and scratches. This is affected by the amount of handling received. All my cards are scanned and stored with the intent to never see the light of day. They are in the same condition and as vivid as the day I received them. If I want to look again later on I fire up photo bucket.

I did, here is the response...the sleeve and plastic were not the best, thats the reason i opened it so people could see the card and corners are perfect.

Do you still have the original holder with the seal intact. Or did you split the seal to open it.

still have the loader and seal open not split


I see the listing has ended... so for those that want to know... No I did not get it.
 
If anyone wants to buy some toploaders to make their cards more valuable...I have a few hundred for sale. Most are even used, so you might have to pay a bit more for those ones...lol.

I'm sure the seller will still get some decent cash for the card...even in its' "destroyed" shape. The only one really losing will be the person who stays away just because a lack of plastic wrapped around the card. If it was a PC for me, I'd be all over it. All Upper Deck cards come without this important piece of plastic and they seem to make their ways to peoples PC :)

The only reason I see keeping a card in a factory slab or factory sealed toploader is if the card numbering is on the case and not the card. But...that is just my opinion, and I have ZERO interest in this card in question. You can have an actual full game used stick for MUCH MUCH cheaper than the card if you wanted :)
