My favorite tournament of the year starts Friday. Great players on an ice surface that actually allows them room to make plays, and officials who call penalties...a chance for great players to shine.

Canada kicks it off against the Americans, so we get a McDavid vs. Matthews matchup on Friday morning. The American team has a lot of young kids, while Canada should have some firepower with some question marks on the back end.

I know the World Juniors are more popular, but I prefer the Worlds. Here's hoping for a decent Canadian showing.

I really enjoy watching it as well. I can't say it's my favorite tournament but the teams all have a decent selection of players. As always I will be cheering on Canada and hopefully will see every game. As a Leaf fan I will be watching all of the USA and Finland games so I can get a look at the top prospects. Should be a good tournament. Go Canada!!!

I figured they would, excellent choice.

This is interesting to me after being part of the leadership group in Anaheim that has had a historical run of collapses the last 4 seasons.

Maybe a precursor to a change in Anaheim a la San Jose's rotating captains?

But I digress, I too love this tourney, but since it always happens during the NHL playoffs I tend to overlook it more then the WJC which happen mid season for the NHL.

Here's the rosters so far:

Glaring omission for Team USA, no Jack Eichel? Canada is stacked as always at forward, wow!

man I love the WHC, Canada is so much fun to watch, like hockey back in the 80's all over again

Perry is the grizzled veteran out of the Canadian group - he can definitely provide leadership.

Parity in the NHL has turned the regular season, playoffs and Stanley Cup into a crap shoot; winning is only 10% skill level in my opinion - I don't believe losing out in the playoffs for 4 years necessarily brings the leadership into question.

I do have it on my bucket list to go to a World Championships some day in a foreign country... not sure when it will happen but looking forward to it.

I agree. Leadership is not defined by wins. Its defined quite differently.

It is not TOTALLY defined by wins but I think good leaders help inspire and instill the WILL to win which translates into actual wins, yes.

Look at Justin Williams when he was with LA. Didn't wear a letter but I thought he was one of the most influential players/leaders on the team.

Perry wears an "A" but I see a lot of his chippy antics, he's a cheap SOB a lot of times. Highly skilled yes, but borderline player when it comes to sportsmanship and class.

So good leader? I don't think so based on what you guys are inferring, is that fair to say, wins aside?

But as Cory mentioned, he has the tenure, so there ya go...............

Leadership comes in many different ways. Bobby Clarke, Mark Messier, Gordie Howe are examples of players who pushed the envelope on lots of plays but they showed that they would do anything to win. They also all put up points. Perry has won the memorial cup with London, world championship, stanley cup, a couple Olympic gold medals as well as some NHL hardware. He plays hard and gets winning results. He plays in a pretty tough division and conference so it's hard to pin the ducks lost on him. I think with the young team they have he was the front runner and likely choice as captain.

Like Phaneuf.;)

Guess you're glad he's gone right?

Sorry, I caught it before your edit. Ha.

Yeah, Brownie has gotten away with a few over the years for sure, not sure how sometimes? Perry is much cheaper in his play, he does ticky tack stuff after the whistle and he isn't really a punishing hitter like Brown.

Brown is hard nosed and he will wallop someone with a body check. Perry is just kind of meh in that regard, he's not powerful. But he does stick his nose in the dirt to score goals, I have to give him credit that he grinds hard for some tallies to compliment his unreal hands and skilled snipes.

Lol. I like Brown as well, Kings are one of my favorite teams. Always a big Gretzky, Robitaille and Nichols fan.

I actually loved Phaneuf. I thought he was a great leader problem was he was paid double what he was worth.

I'm 99.9% sure this was Jack's decision. Said he wasn't going to play in the World Championships because he needed the summer to unwind and recover after his whirlwind of a rookie season.

Canada's strength (forwards) versus USA's weakness (goaltending) equal DOMINATION! :whatthehell:

Holy smokes, Canada might just run away with this tourney. Matt Duchene looks locked in out there, he's been the best player on the ice IMO.

You're right. Duchene is all over the place. A guy who typically shines on the international stage with more space to showcase his speed and hands.

He looked HUNGARY .. who, coincidentally, Canada plays next. Wonder what the score will be in that one??

Laine seems like to hang around with Sasha and Koivu - 2+1 after two periods in his wc debut. I'm so excited to see this tournament and it's affect to the nhl draft. If I was Shanny, I'd really put my focus on this kid.

The future continues to be bright for the NHL. So many fantastic young players out there now. Every year there seems to be a pile of really good new players. An awesome time to be a hockey fan!
