You know they still have goaltenders in the NHL, right?
really . . .
You know they still have goaltenders in the NHL, right?
Hall is def the better player but you have to think that salary factors into the equasion. In addition to picking up a top 4 d-man the Oilers shave roughly 3.5 mil off the salary cap, which will of course be used towards bringing in either a different type of forward (Lucic) or another top-4 via free-agency. So, really, it's Larsson and the opportunity to sign another player for the Oilers. But I'm shocked to see this trade ... I definitely thought Taylor Hall was a keeper for the Oil.
On a side note, the Devils have made some very nice moves in the past couple of weeks.
Hall is decent on the defensive end for the past few years but that is only because he scores points. Was he sheltered and had more offensive starts than D?
I think that Edmonton got the upper hand in this deal. They needed a solid Dman. This trade gave them a solid Dman for a couple of years with a possible upswing. They gave up points with Hall, but they needed D for the last few years. They may have a good pairing with Darnell Nurse coming in.
Hall will be good with the Devils but he will struggle, posting around 60 points this year in the always d-minded system. (He will score about 25 goals.)
Edmonton got as much as could have been expected - frankly, I am shocked they got that much. Larsson is a top pair defenseman, is only 23, has a very favorable contract and will be the best d-man that Edmonton has had in...I was going to make a joke but I think I might undersell how bad it's been...
No one was offering anything - rumors abound that they could have gotten a top pairing if they thru in the 4th overall pick this year as well (I heard it was a Western Conference team as opposed to the earlier rumor of Subban but who knows...) but that would have been worse. Now you blow two top five picks on a defenseman instead of just one? How is that any better?
They should have learned from the Canucks a couple years ago - teams know what to ask for when you are pinned into a corner and absolutely have to make a trade. Thinking they could have gotten Larsson plus a pick is wishful thinking at best - but hoping that it would have been a pick of any consequence is foolish.
If you feel any better about, just pretend they got another first round pick in the deal and blew it on someone like Magnus Paajarvi
The Oilers did have Pronger and his wandering eyes for a bit.
Hall is a charter member of the Piece of C*** Club. You don't win with guys like that on your team; especially in a leadership role like he had in Edmonton.
2 - None of the top six drafted players is on the team that drafted them
3 - 8 of the top 11 are still on their drafted team but one of those is also Alexander Burmistrov who spent two non-rookie years in Russia
Chiararelli pretty much ran Boston into the ground with his moves there imo. He might get saved in Edmonton just because they have so many top prospects; but c'mon, you basically traded away Seguin and Hall for nothing. Larsson is good but most likely a number 2 or number 3 and I wish him luck playing on that backend....
Hall may have issues the same as Seguin did but both are young. Seguin seems to be doing well now character wise. There is obviously no one in that Edmonton locker room to set Hall straight and provide leadership. That is a fault of management. I have heard this one phrased many different ways but in the words of Napoleon, "There are no bad regiments; there are only bad colonels."
Leadership starts at the top. For hockey teams this is a good owner, then working it's way down through the subsequent ranks.
Chiarelli is not looking so hot right now. Everyone is bitter. Hall. McDavid. The fans. Sure, there's a handful of people that say this was the move to make, good deal, but that's only because they don't like Taylor Hall.
I slept on this one, woke up, reassessed, and yup, it's still a bad trade for Edmonton considering all they have to work with as far as assets!
Saw a great quote from an NHL executive who said "We didn't even know Hall was available? If we had we would have STARTED with two future 1st rounders AND a 2nd pairing d man."
But Chiarelli apparently jumped the gun and ran with Larsson. Or everyone just hates Edmonton with 4 numbers ones in 6 years and aren't looking to help them. This trade is Exhibit A of that. Curious see what's (who) is next?
