Crack Them Slabbed Cards Open

Just send the card in the mail to yourself. By the time it arrives, the case will be nicely cracked and easy to pry apart!

i used a pair of pliers and cracked a corner and then inserted a screwdriver to wiggle it open.

It sucks that getting a card graded can sometimes drop the value. I have a couple cards that got lower grades than expected and really bummed me out cause I knew they would be hard to sell for what I want,,,so I just took them out of the slab and then got rid of them... I got what I wanted but still wasted like 30 bucks on getting them graded.

That is exactly what happened to me and why I started posting on this thread. I sometimes wonder what the BGS graders are looking at.

What grade of card do you think is worth opening up and selling unslabbed? Do you think you get fair value for a card, say, 8.5 or is it more like a 9?

Even though some cards just don't sell with a crappy grade. Sometimes I like to know that my card isn't going to get any worse than an 8.5 since it is protected or even an 8!!! IMMA KILL YOU BGS for that 8 on my Hossa Cut To The Case RC.... NO WAY that was an 8 lol.

It has made me scared to send my Hossa Elite Status RC in.... It looks really really good but yah never know haha.unless one of you guys here is a grader and can hook me up with a 9.5 or 10!

How to Open BGS or PSA card case?

I recently subscribed to Beckett and got a mailer for 2 free card gradings. Anyway, I got my Jeff Skinner 20th Anniversary retro graded as part of the promotion, but that was before I decided to go in for the set. Now that I am only 3 cards away from completion, I'd rather break open the graded card to use this card as part of the set, as opposed to having to buy another one.

Has anybody ever opened up a BGS seal to get the card back out? Obviously, I don't want to damage the card, but I'm worried that I might just have to sell the graded card just to have to buy it again!

Let me know, and thanks!

Cut the top of the slab off with a Dremel tool or whatever you've got that'll cut plastic. SLowly work your way around the rest of the edges with a screwdriver or some kind of blade prying the case open. Takes about 30 seconds to do.

just did it now... cut the top two corners with some kind of wire cutter or heavy duty scissor, then use a flat head screw driver and slowly run it along the edges until the plastic splits open enough that the card + sleeve slide out.

btw, it was a Luongo RC graded a BGS 8, which is cleaner than most BGS 9's I've seen.

Good call on breaking that one out of it's cage. I bet a raw copy not in a slab would go for way more than if it was encased as a BGS 8.

Breaking Slabbed Cards

I'm contemplating breaking up my slabbed cards from ITG and older BAP Ultimate sets. I just find them to be too bulky and distant in terms of being able touch the cards and have them stored with other one-touch cards.

How did you go about breaking them without causing any damage? Any opinions would be great. Thanks.

When I break out BGS slabbed cards I use pliers and a long flat-head screwdriver.

With the pliers, I break off a piece of the upper left or right corner. Enough to expose the BGS label. (*This might not be the best way to do it if you want to keep the label)

With the long flat-head screwdriver, I CAREFULLY stick the end of the flat-head in the slab (over the label part) and GENTLY pry the slabs apart.

Once you pry the slabs half way apart you should be able to use both hands to separate the slabs.

Then with scissors cut the card out of the enclosed sleeve.

I would never break them open the cards are nearly impossible to sell after if you ever change your mind. Why does everyone want to touch their card???? I like the big ITG plastic slabs that way I know the GU piece is intact and will stay in great condition. And if you do break them, make sure you keep the label so at least if someone buys it from you, they can have it resealed at ITG.

theres actually some of us left that dont give a rats *** about the value of a card and not worried about reselling it. I think they look much better outside of the slab so I take all of mine out and put them in top loaders

Don't get me wrong I don't care too much about reselling them either, just look at my PC and you'll understand that I don't care too much about reselling all of them. I just think the slab themselves are nicer than any toploader or one touch.
