Dany Heatley requests trade

because grebeshkov was one of the most improved players on the team last year, he's easy to teach and hes turning to be like a visnovsky type player good in back end and offensively and hes still young.

I'm all for Heatly going to the Oil. Not at the expense of any of their young Talent, Including Eberle.

The problem is though the Sens are going to want a comparable star (Hemsky, Visnovsky, Souray) or a top young player(Gagner, Eberle, Cogliano). If they don`t get one or the other the trade is not worth it. They won`t trade for a handful of spare parts (although Boston did with Thornton).

I agree, Grebeshkov is becoming a great dmen. They should lock him up fast before a offer sheet is offered. I think a team may offer him a RFA in the SUmmer.

Unfortunately Murray and the Sens don't have options galore here.
If they do not trade him by July 1st, they have to pay the approx. $4M bonus due to Heatley. There is no way the Sens are going to let that date pass, pay that amount of dough, and then trade him for a superstar. That makes as much sense as a baby talking jibber.

With the new development being that Heatley doesn't want to play for the Sens anymore, they have to field the teams offers and pick the best one that will serve their immediate needs. This totally reminds me of the Pronger fiasco as the circumstances were practically the same as they are in this instance.

Unfortunately for Murray, now that Heatley and his agent have voiced their concerns publicly, every other GM in the league knows full-well that when it comes down to Murray making the eventual trade, the ball will not be completely in his court and he will have to take what he can get. This is why the Oilers scenario makes sense as its a win-win for both squads.
If there is another team in the Western Conference that wants Heatley, I'd be very interested to see what there offer is.

Had Murray contacted each GM privately to let them know that their best offer will be listened to and behind closed doors, this very well may have been a completely different story.

Of course, Eklund thinks otherwise...so what do I know :)

Can someone please tell me why the Sens won't just keep him and play him? If he plays on a subpar level, no one's gonna want him, and when it comes time for a new contract, he won't be getting as much $$.

Why in the world would you want to have a guy on your team who doesn't want to be there? All it will do is cause a disturbance in the room. Negativity breeds more negativity. Plus, the guy has 5 years left on his contract at an average of 7 mil per. Why would he care about his numbers? He's not playing for a new contract.

Get rid of him. I bet once he's gone Spezza will be a better team guy as well. Those two were good buddies and I'm sure Heater filled his head with garbage. Maybe now Spezza will follow the right people in the organization

Heatley to Hamilton for a bunch of cash and their next three first rounders!

I could see Ottawa making a move and wanting to go in a different direction with Clouston at the helm now... it all depends on how close they think they are. I'd go the prospects and draft pick route 'cause I don't think they're anywhere near Cup competitive.

And I doubt Heatley will be sitting out if he doesn't get his way... isn't he still angling for a spot on Team Canada? It sure would suck to lose out on that chance to protest where you play.

So in 9 pages of this topic, nobody has really explained WHY Heatley requested to be traded. Yes Clouston is probably part of it, but can anything be done to please Heatley and keep him on the team?

I'm sure gunning for a great offensive D-Men would bring a lot of good to Ottawa, but at the same time offense was greatly lacking on that team for a good part of the year. I would think Ottawa could try and please Heatley and take a chance with the defense and goaltending next year (my local paper yesterday was stating that Heatley was annoyed by the fact he wasn't playing with Alfie and Spezza on the PP and sometimes playing on the 2nd line...dunno if that's true but it does make sense). But then again, it might be nice to have a great offensive D-Man to help develop young Erik Karlsson should he make the cut.

However, Ottawa already has a surplus of potential NHL D-Men. If they trade for a D-Man, they should consider moving at least one or two of potential third pair D-Men, such as Schubert, Picard, Lee...

I don't really like his reasons for wanting to leave, but whatever. As for the defenseman we've got, smith is likely to retire so thats one gone and Bell may or may not get signed so that really leaves Schubert and we still don't have that one great defenseman.

I don`t think we are hearing the entire story behind this. It seems odd that he would request to leave over his linemates and not enough PP time.

Although I`m a Leaf fan I can`t help but feel bad for the Sens. Over the past year and a half everything has been going wrong for them. Maybe changing the team dynamic by trading Heatley and a couple of other core players could help turn it around.

IMO the Sens needed to rebuild and split up the big three. No one in management would do it so Heatley is taking it upon himself.

I keep seeing people say "Heatley is a 50 goal scorer".

Heatley WAS a 50 goal scorer. Heatley hasn't even sniffed at 50 goals in two seasons, despite playing with two of the top fowards in the game in Alfie and Spezza. His numbers have decreased the last two seasons, and he's got a hefty price tag for any team that wants to take him on.

One of Heatley's biggest downfalls to me that sort of deters his status as a marquee player is that from what I've seen...he rarely shows up and steps up his game when his team doesn't. He only scores about 5 or 6 of his 40-50 goals a season in regulation losses. This season, he didn't score in a loss after February 21st, recording 4 assists in 8 games and only scored in 5 regulation losses the whole season. Many of those losses were to teams they should have beaten enroute to that playoff run they were trying to make (it was a moot point by then, but still)

I realize it's a weird stat given regulation losses are often 1 or 2 goals for (or even shutouts) and it's easier to score in winning scenarios, but you can't discount the value of a star that will step up in the clutch to try to pull the team out. In comparison, Rick Nash had similar stats this season, and did this 8 times with less losses against and less games played this year. Alex Burrows and Alex Frolov (two players I selected at random) did it more times with less goals scored. Even Jason Spezza with 32 goals did it more than Heatley. If I'm paying 7.5 million a season to someone, I want them to be someone who can help me turn those losses into wins, not turn those wins into larger margins of victory. At the end, my goals against means jack if I'm still 12 points out of the playoffs.

I'm not commenting directly at you Rob...just bringing your comment back to the forefront because there's an air of truth to it.

Don't feel TOO bad for them, I guarantee they haven't felt bad for us over the past few years. Instead, take consolation in the fact that our franchise is finally in a better position than the Sens for the first time in a long time.

Whoa whoa whoa...let's not say things we can't take back.

Don`t know if we are in a better position yet, but definately heading in a better direction. We`ll see after the draft and July1st

If he gets moved, the return would be astronominical, but I don't think anything will come of this. It was an off year, and unless he doesn't get along with Clouston, which was reported late in the year, I do not see this being true.

I don't think the return would be as big as you might think. He still has 5 years at 7.5 mil, thats a pretty big cap hit especially if the cap lowers. He also has a no trade clause so he gets a say as to where he goes, although i would love to see him in Edmonton as the Oil need a bonified sniper he is a Calgary boy.
Wonder if he wants to play with Iginla in his hometown?
