How do you sign Leon after this?

Lucic & RNH are making $6MM a piece until 20-21 add McDavid into the mix you have $25.25MM aka 1/3 of the Salary Cap tied up in 3 players. Where do you fit Draisaitl in?

There is also a VERY good chance Draisaitl gets hit with a $9M+ offer sheet from another team, which will only make it that much tougher. The Oilers could be looking at having to pay $22-23M/yr for their top two players.

True. McDavid and the team also need Draisaitl. If they somehow lose him, they can kiss their dreams of a dynasty goodbye. If you want to win championships, sometimes you got to take a bit of a hometown discount.

But it doesn't kick in for another year, he didn't take max dollars - and as the cap goes up over the next eight years, and it will because the players will need it to make room for future FAs despite the escrow clawed back - it will still be a lower percentage. Same kind of plan that Chicago did with Kane and Toews. Except I don't see Edmonton also signing 2 D for similar cap hits % wise. And it's also not going like Ovechkin did when he re-upped and took up nearly the 20% cap max.

The fact that they got the eight year term is a win for the Oilers - and not the standard five going up to his first year of UFA. They bought 3 of his UFA years with that. Now as long as Katz doesn't try to butt his nose into the hockey ops like he did 11 years ago...
 
When Crosby signed his extension (the first one) it was about 17% of the cap too.

So, amazingly enough, similar deals when you factor in cap inflation.

Just something to keep in mind

I heard Elliot Friedman on the radio today saying that Crosby was 14% of the cap when he signed vs McDavid being 17%.

Although perhaps that was his current deal, the one where he took a hometown discount to accommodate other players.

I suppose once McDavid's contract is in its second half, $13.25 may closer to 14% too. But in the near term, it isn't.

Was funny hearing the guys on local radio today saying that McDavid did the Oilers a favor by not insisting on the maximum 20% of the cap. Yeah, thanks kid! Thanks for not completely crippling us, just partially, lol.

In fairness Crosby's current front-loaded contract is no longer allowed, and that $8.7M cap hit was in large part thanks to the three final years at $3M that drove the average down. The bulk of that contract has Crosby making between $9-12M in actual salary. Had he signed a deal in the current CBA (like Malkin did with his $9.5M AAV) his cap hit would be more like $10-11m. He "took less" in the sense that he tacked on a few years at the end for pennies (years he may not even play, who knows) but in reality he wouldn't have done that if limited to an 8-year deal like the current CBA. I don't see Crosby actually taking $8.7M in yearly salary to make that AAV.

Edit: Ran quick numbers and if you only take the first 8 years of Crosby's contract (the current max) his cap hit would be $10.8M. A touch more than Toews/Kane/Kopitar. Was/is he worth more? Sure. But the situation at the time afforded him the chance to save his team roughly $2.1M in cap space that he would not be able to do today without taking a considerable bath.

Actually.... When Crosby signed his deal, the first one out of his entry level contract, the % cap hit was 17.3%.

Cap this season is expected to be $75M. Mcdavid at $13.25 us 17.6% of that. Pretty much spot on.

Not to mention this Mcdavid contract kicks in followin NEXT season... so in 2018-19....When the cap is likely even slightly higher.

ahhh pretty sure Crosby was 14% or maybe add a .2 or .3 on to that 14 when he signed.

I don't have any problem with this if it turns out to be fact July 1st.
As mentioned, the deal would not kick in until the following season. Considering that, I would expect RNH to be traded at that time, therefore eliminating that $6M cap burden.

Add on to that players come and go every season and the team salaries are adjusted accordingly, the cap continues to go up, etc....

And Draisaitl deserves what he and his agent settles on, as he really is that good of a player and complements McDavid in so many ways, that the opportunity for even a mini dynasty during this next decade is very very possible for the Oilers.

As for the offer sheet possibility on Drai, I find it quite funny that this is being rumoured, after PC already said he would match it.

These two contracts are necessary and great for this team long term.
